Yuniesky Betancourt slugged his eighth home run of the season in Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Rangers.
Yuni's two-run shot capped off a five-run first inning against Texas starter Justin Grimm. Betancourt, 31, is never going to be a complete baseball player, but he does possess some pop and is worthy of a roster spot in standard fantasy leagues when he is getting regular playing time and swinging the bat with authority. Both of those things are happening right now. May 7 - 11:29 PM

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Wednesday that Yuniesky Betancourt will be the club's regular first baseman when Aramis Ramirez (knee) is activated from the disabled list Friday.

In turn, Alex Gonzalez will function as a utility infielder. The decision doesn't come as a big surprise, as Betancourt is off to a surprisingly hot start. We don't expect it to last, but he should be owned in deeper mixed leagues until Corey Hart (knee) is ready to return.
May 1 - 12:10 PM

Yuniesky Betancourt will make his first career start out of the cleanup spot Saturday against the Dodgers.

Betancourt has been on a tear over the past two weeks and currently ranks second on the Brewers with four home runs and 16 RBI. There's no way he can maintain this pace, but the infielder could be worth an add in deeper mixed leagues while he's getting regular at-bats.
Apr 27 - 7:21 PM

Yuniesky Betancourt ripped a three-run homer in Monday's 7-1 win over the Padres.

Ryan Braun took Jason Marquis deep first with a two-run shot, and Betancourt provided the exclamation point with the three-run bomb. Yuni is batting just .245 so far this month for the Brew Crew, but it's come along with a surprising three homers and 12 RBI. He obviously has his warts but is worth using in NL-only formats.
Apr 23 - 1:26 AM

Yuniesky Betancourt had a big day Thursday in his first game back in a Brewers uniform, going 3-for-4 with a double and two-run homer against the Rockies.

Between his work with the Phillies and now with the Brew Crew, Yuni has batted a blistering .471 with 16 RBI this spring. He'll function as the backup middle infielder.
Mar 28 - 7:15 PM

Brewers signed INF Yuniesky Betancourt to a one-year contract.

Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports that he could earn a total of $1.4 million, including incentives. The 30-year-old batted just .228/.256/.400 with seven homers and 36 RBI in 57 games last season for the Royals and will serve as a utility infielder for Milwaukee.
Mar 27 - 3:54 PM

Justin Bopp of SB Nation reports that the Brewers have signed infielder Yuniesky Betancourt.

The deal was announced as a major league deal by Betancourt's agents, though it hasn't been confirmed by the team. Betancourt was released by the Phillies over the weekend after batting .447 (21-for-47) with one home run and 14 RBI this spring. He'll presumably function as a utility infielder.
Mar 26 - 3:44 PM

Phillies released INF Yuniesky Betancourt.

Betancourt didn't make the Phillies' 25-man roster and has been given his release. He's batting .447 with a 1.025 OPS this spring and is expected to receive interest from multiple teams, including the Yankees and Cardinals. Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen have now all but locked up Opening Day roster spots.
Mar 24 - 4:15 PM

Yuniesky Betancourt will ask for his release on Sunday if he's not added to the Phillies' 25-man roster.

Betancourt is batting .439 with a .957 OPS this spring, but the Phillies have other options to back up in the middle infield. Despite a career .266/.290/.392 batting line and shaky defense, Yuni wouldn't be out of a job long if released.
Mar 22 - 12:33 PM

Yuniesky Betancourt went 3-for-4 with a double Saturday against the Yankees.

Betancourt is batting .412 with seven RBI in 34 at-bats this spring. The Phillies appear content to stick with Freddy Galvis as a utilityman, which would leave no room for Betancourt on the roster. However, he can opt out of his deal next Sunday and may do so for the chance to latch on with another team.
Mar 16 - 3:53 PM

Yuniesky Betancourt can opt out of his minor league contract with the Phillies on March 24.

In other words, the Phillies have less than three weeks to decide whether Betancourt will have an Opening Day roster spot. The 30-year-old infielder owns a weak .266/.290/.392 career batting line and has little range defensively, but MLB.com beat writer Todd Zolecki thinks Yuni will make the team as a bench player.

Phillies signed INF Yuniesky Betancourt to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Betancourt posted a .228 batting average and .256 on-base percentage in 228 plate appearances last season for the Royals. He's not a good defender and seems doubtful to contribute in a significant way for Philly. The 30-year-old owns a .266/.290/.392 career batting line.
Jan 28 - 12:11 PM

According to MLBTradeRumors.com, free agent infielder Yuniesky Betancourt expects to land somewhere soon.

"I can assure you that Yuni will be signing a major league contract," agent Alex Esteban told MLBTR. "Currently, there are four teams we are in conversations with and we expect to be finalizing a deal shortly after the holidays." Betancourt, 30, hit just .228/.256/.400 with seven homers and 36 RBI in 57 games this past season for the Royals.

Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports that the Royals have requested release waivers on Yuniesky Betancourt.

Just a formality before he hits the open market. Betancourt was designated for assignment by the Royals earlier this month after hitting just .228/.256/.400 with seven home runs, 36 RBI and a .656 OPS over 228 plate appearances this season. He wasn't worth his $2 million salary, but it likely won't take him long to find a minor league deal elsewhere.

Royals designated INF Yuniesky Betancourt for assignment.

For some reason, Kansas City handed Yuni a one-year contract worth $2 million over the winter. We aren't sure if another team would have gone above a minor-league deal. The 30-year-old native of Cuba has never finished a season with an on-base percentage above .310 (.260 this year), nor an OPS better than .725 (.668), and his defense was so awful at shortstop that the Royals only played him one game at the position this year. He keeps getting opportunities, but odds are that he's signed his last major league contract.
