Royals claimed C George Kottaras off waivers from the Athletics.

Kottaras won't get much playing time unless Salvador Perez gets injured, but he represents a nice upgrade over Brett Hayes as the backup. The 29-year-old batted .211/.351/.415 with nine homers last year between the Brewers and A's.

Chad Jennings of the Journal News reports that the Yankees aren't interested in George Kottaras.

Kottaras was designated for assignment by the Athletics last week following the acquisition of John Jaso. While there was some speculation that the Yankees could have interest, they appear poised to open the season with a catching tandem of Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart.
Jan 23 - 2:34 PM

Athletics designated C George Kottaras for assignment.

The move was made in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for John Jaso. Kottaras is a viable backup, at the very least, and seems likely to be traded. He's slated to make $1 million in 2013 after batting .211/.351/.415 with nine homers last year.

Athletics and C George Kottaras avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the deal is worth $1 million. Kottaras, who was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter, made $700,000 last season while hitting .211/.351/.415 with nine home runs, 31 RBI and a .766 OPS in 209 plate appearances between the Brewers and Athletics. He's slated to begin 2013 as Derek Norris' backup.

George Kottaras hit a go-ahead homer in the top of the 10th inning Tuesday as the A's beat the Rangers 3-2.

Another unlikely hero in an unlikely season for the A's. Kottaras is batting just .220 with a .793 OPS in 81 games this year but came through in the clutch Tuesday night. Oakland now boasts a 2 1/2-game lead over the Angels in the chase for the second American League Wild Card.

George Kottaras blasted a three-run homer in Friday's 6-1 win over the Mariners.

Kottaras tagged King Felix Hernandez in the fourth. It was his only hit in four trips to the plate, though he also drew a walk. Rotating starts with Derek Norris, Kottaras is a poor AL-only league option for the fantasy playoffs.

George Kottaras went 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBI against the Red Sox on Friday.

The four former Red Sox in Oakland's lineup combined for nine hits, 13 RBI and 10 runs scored tonight. Josh Reddick and Brandon Moss both had four RBI to go along with Kottaras' five. Coco Crisp, on the other hand, didn't make much of a contribution, going 0-for-5.

Athletics acquired C George Kottaras from the Brewers in exchange for RHP Fautino De Los Santos.

The A's haven't announced who he'll replace on the roster, but he would figure to take Derek Norris' spot. Kottaras was designated for assignment last week after batting .209 with 24 strikeouts in 119 plate appearances. He has some pop and can draw walks, though, and should see plenty of playing time against right-handers.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Brewers have traded George Kottaras to the Athletics.

Details are still streaming in, but an agreement has been finalized. Kottaras was designated for assignment by the Brewers earlier this week after batting .209 with 24 strikeouts in 119 plate appearances for Milwaukee. He should see semi-regular playing time out in Oakland.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports the Brewers are close to trading George Kottaras to the Athletics.

It's not yet clear what the Brewers would get in return, but it likely won't be anything of value. Kottaras was designated for assignment earlier this week when the Brewers activated Jonathan Lucroy from the disabled list.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Thursday that he is working on trade involving George Kottaras.

Kottaras was designated for assignment on Thursday when the Brewers activated Jonathan Lucroy from the disabled list. The 29-year-old backstop is batting just .209 (18-for-86) this season, but has also drawn 29 walks and has some pop from the left side of the plate. Melvin hopes to complete a trade within the next couple of days.

Brewers designated C George Kottaras for assignment.

Kottaras was batting just .209 with 24 strikeouts in 116 plate appearances this season for Milwaukee. The 29-year-old backstop could draw some interest on waivers.

George Kottaras has been nursing a sore hamstring for the past several days.

It probably explains why Martin Maldonado has started four of the last five games, though Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said he plans to play Maldonado plenty while Jonathan Lucroy (hand) is out. "'Maldy' is a very good defensive catcher," said Roenicke. "I don't think we ever mind having 'Maldy' in the game. It'll be nice when George gets to the point where I can put him in against pitchers I think he matches up well against and the pitchers he matches up with for us that we'd like to throw to him." It sounds like this will be more of a timeshare, which obviously limits Kottaras' fantasy appeal.

George Kottaras went 2-for-3 with a critical seventh-inning long ball that powered the Brewers over the Cubs on Wednesday.

Last season Kottaras established himself as one of the league's better backup catchers. This season he is already 3-for-7 (.429) with two home runs and five RBI.
