Cameron Maybin is out of the Tigers' lineup Thursday due to lingering thumb discomfort.

Maybin jammed his thumb in late August and missed a full week of action, and he told reporters Thursday morning that he felt renewed discomfort during his at-bats Wednesday night. He could need regular days off down the stretch. JaCoby Jones is starting in center field and batting eighth Thursday afternoon against the Twins.

Maybin has battled a wide array of injuries this season, but has been extremely productive offensively when on the field. He's now hitting .320/.388/.400 with three homers, 36 RBI and 15 stolen bases on the year.

An MRI taken Tuesday on Cameron Maybin's injured left thumb showed no major damage.

Maybin tweaked the previously-sprained thumb Monday while attempting to steal second base in the fifth inning and was held out of action Tuesday. He probably won't play Wednesday either, but this shouldn't be an extended absence because it's just a bruise. Great news for the Tigers.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said that Cameron Maybin will go for an MRI on his left thumb on Tuesday.

Maybin exited Monday's game with what was termed as a bruised left thumb. The Tigers are calling him day-to-day after X-rays came back negative, but obviously there's reason for concern given that he recently had a stint on the disabled list with the same thumb. More should be known on his status on Tuesday.

Uh oh. Maybin made his return last weekend after missing a couple of weeks with a left thumb sprain and it appears that he aggravated the injury while attempting to steal second base in the fifth inning. The Tigers should pass along an update soon. Tyler Collins replaced Maybin in the lineup.

Tyler Collins will start in center field and bat second versus Minnesota right-hander Jose Berrios. This is just a routine day of maintenance for Maybin, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI on Wednesday and boasts a .326 batting average in 274 plate appearances this season.

Maybin drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning, and a two-run single in the sixth inning gave the Tigers a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The stolen base was Maybin's first in two games since returning from a sprained thumb, and he's now got five RBI in those two games. Now that he's proven his health, the 29-year-old should move up in the Tigers' lineup after batting ninth Tuesday. Maybin is hitting .325/.397/.397 with 14 stolen bases on the year.

Maybin faced Jordan Zimmermann (lat) in a simulated game Sunday and apparently looked good enough to force his way back onto the roster. He's in center field and batting second against Henry Owens and the Red Sox on Sunday.

It's another step forward for Maybin, who has spent most of the month battling a sprained thumb. If Maybin's BP session goes well, he could start a rehab assignment in the near future. Andrew Romine and Tyler Collins have been sharing center-field duties during his absence.
