Reds sent RHP Daryl Thompson outright to Triple-A Louisville.

Thompson made one relief appearance for the Reds in May, but spent most of the season at the Triple-A level. The 25-year-old right-hander was mostly organizational depth, so there was little reason to waste a 40-man roster spot on him.

Reds optioned RHP Daryl Thompson to Triple-A Louisville.

Thompson was just called up Monday to give the Reds another arm out of the bullpen, but it turns out he wasn't needed. He'll continue to provide organizational depth at the Triple-A level.

Reds recalled RHP Daryl Thompson from Triple-A Louisville.

Thompson allowed five runs in a three-inning outing earlier this season for the Reds, but his minor league track record suggests that he's a bit better than that. The 25-year-old has posted a 3.65 career ERA in eight-plus seasons down on the farm.

Reds optioned RHP Daryl Thompson to Double-A Carolina.

Thompson gave innings, albeit poor ones, the day after the 19-inning affair against the Phillies, allowing five runs over three frames. He'll go back to the starting rotation at Carolina.

Reds recalled RHP Daryl Thompson from Double-A Carolina.

He'll replace the injured Matt Maloney on the active roster and give the Reds another option out of the bullpen following Wednesday's 19-inning loss to the Phillies. Thompson, who was acquired from the Nationals in 2006, hasn't appeared in the big leagues since the 2008 season due to shoulder problems. Still only 25 years old, he had a 4.44 ERA and 41/17 K/BB ratio over his first nine starts at the Double-A level this season.

Reds sent RHP Daryl Thompson outright to Triple-A Louisville.

It's somewhat surprising that Thompson was able to pass through waivers unclaimed. He's had some arm troubles, but allowed just 105 hits and posted a 99/30 K/BB ratio in 127 minor league innings just one year ago.

Reds optioned RHP Daryl Thompson and outfielder Norris Hopper to Triple-A Louisville; reassigned outfielder Jacque Jones to minor league camp.

Micah Owings claimed the final spot in Cincinnati's rotation, so Thompson will head to Triple-A and wait for a callup. He's struggled with shoulder problems, but if healthy could be with the Reds to stay by midseason.

Daryl Thompson (shoulder) pitched in a minor league game Thursday.

It was his first live action in over two weeks. Micah Owings seems to have locked up the fifth spot in the Reds' starting rotation, so there's no point in rushing Thompson. He'll start the season at Triple-A and act as the club's emergency sixth starter. We'd expect to see him back in the majors at some point this summer.

Daryl Thompson is being held back by shoulder tightness this spring.

Thompson has flashed impressive talent while pitching between shoulder injuries over the past few seasons. He was said to have an outside shot at the Reds' rotation, but his latest shoulder problems will keep him off the Opening Day roster. Thompson could resurface by May or June as long as this latest shoulder woe is just hiccup.

Manager Dusty Baker said Thursday that Daryl Thompson has "an outside shot" at being the Reds' fifth starter.

"A lot of variables have to happen, but he'll be here eventually," Baker said. Thompson projects as a mid-rotation starter in time, but is just 23 years old and has struggled through shoulder injuries. For now, expect him to begin the season at Triple-A and join the rotation for the second half.

Daryl Thompson has been placed on the disabled list at Triple-A with a shoulder strain.

Thompson made three starts for the Reds earlier this season. "We don't think it's too serious," director of player development Terry Reynolds said. "We think with rest and rehab he'll be able to pitch again this year."

Reds optioned RHP Daryl Thompson to Triple-A Louisville.

Thompson went 0-2 with a 6.91 ERA while facing two of the game's better offenses in his three major league starts. If that's all the time the Reds were going to give him, then they never should have recalled him in the first place. Josh Fogg was ready to return before Thompson got the call. He'll almost surely take over now.

The Reds are sending Daryl Thompson back to Triple-A to make room for Andy Phillips on the roster.

Another team that simply can't make up its mind. Josh Fogg will almost surely go back into the rotation in place of Thompson.

Daryl Thompson was handed his first loss Friday after allowing four runs in five-plus innings against the Indians.

Thompson had a shutout going until Grady Sizemore launched a solo homer in the fifth. He still finished that inning strong, but he retired none of the three batters he faced in the sixth. After he left, the two other pitchers acquired by the Reds in the Austin Kearns-Felipe Lopez deal -- Bill Bray and Gary Majewski -- combined to allow the two inherited runners to score.
