Rangers signed C Robinzon Diaz to a minor league contract.

He was assigned to Triple-A Round Rock. Diaz spent the 2011 season in the Rangers organization. He moved on to the Angels this season and was released a few days ago. The 28-year-old backstop hasn't appeared in the majors since 2009 with the Pirates. Diaz will provide catching depth at the minor league level and is probably one more injury away from the bigs, with Mike Napoli on the disabled list.

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Tigers have interest in Robinzon Diaz.

The Pirates might look to deal from a strength, as they are one of a few teams in the majors with major-league ready depth at the position. Look for other potential suitors to join the mix. The 25-year-old Diaz is batting .295 with a homer and 15 RBI for the Buccos this season. He is currently playing for Triple-A Indianapolis.

In a surprise C Robinzon Diaz is batting fifth for the Pirates Tuesday.

Diaz has an 8-for-18 line against right-handers and has gone 6-for-15 over the last four games. Clearly, John Russell is riding the hot hand.

Pirates recalled C Robinzon Diaz from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Diaz takes the roster spot created by Ryan Doumit (wrist) hitting the DL, and if the Pirates give him enough playing time, his ability to hit for average could make an impact in NL-only leagues. Diaz was hitting .350 (7-for-20) with a double and three RBI in six games for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Pirates optioned C Robinzon Diaz and OF/1B Steve Pearce to Triple-A Indianapolis; reassigned INF Anderson Machado to minor league camp.

Diaz should be very frustrated. The Pirates said it was a competition, but he was outstanding this spring (.423/.464/.769) and still lost out to Jason Jaramillo, who is hitting .143/.226/.143. Jaramillo is the superior defender, but Diaz is hardly bad behind the plate. The Pirates shouldn't have lied about giving him a chance to win the job.
