Elliot Johnson has started four of the last five games at second base for the Royals.
Johnson is batting .400/.429/.550 over the last six games and will continue to play while he's hot. Chris Getz will still see plenty of time at second base, though. "He’s swinging the bat well and playing exceptional defense. He’s made some nice plays up the middle," manager Ned Yost said of Johnson. "But when (Chris Getz) Getzie gets hot, we’ll ride him. Elliot Johnson left Wednesday's game after one inning due to a bruised shin.

Johnson was injured at second base while turning a double play. He's expected to recover fully in a couple days. "He's fine, it was more of a precautionary thing," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He was fighting to stay in the game, but this early, let's get some ice on it."

Royals acquired INF Elliot Johnson from the Rays as the player to be named in the James Shields trade.

Johnson was designated for assignment by the Rays last week. The 28-year-old batted just .242/.304/.350 with six home runs and 33 RBI in 331 plate appearances last season for Tampa Bay and figures to compete for a backup infielder job this spring.

Elliot Johnson suffered knee and facial abrasions during a play at the plate in Friday's loss to the Blue Jays.

Johnson passed a concussion test and is listed as day-to-day. Manager Joe Maddon said Johnson could play Saturday if needed, but the Rays will try to avoid using him as a precautionary measure.

Elliot Johnson had a nice night at the dish on Thursday, going 2-for-4 with a run driven in.

While he won't exactly light the world on fire, Johnson does have some value as a potential middle infielder in deeper mixed leagues. For the season, he's now hitting .270 with four homers and 20 RBI to go along with his 13 stolen bases.

Elliot Johnson hit a two-run homer in Sunday's win over the Marlins.

Johnson's fourth blast of the year came against Anibal Sanchez in the fourth. Johnson is now batting .270/.343/.397 through Tampa's first 60 games, and has stolen nine bases to go along with 16 RBI. There are worse options in exceptionally deep mixed leagues.

Elliot Johnson will likely make the Opening Day roster if Reid Brignac (foot) is placed on the disabled list.

Brignac is currently dealing with a plantar fascia condition in his right foot and Rays manager Joe Maddon confirmed Thursday that the injury "has a chance" to impact his availability for Opening Day. Johnson, who is out of options, would likely function as a backup for Sean Rodriguez if Johnson misses the start of the season.

Johnson has been sidelined since the end of May with a sprained left knee. He was starting to get more playing time at shortstop before the injury, though it's not clear what role he'll have upon his return.

Despite the poor showing, the anticipation is that Johnson will be activated from the DL Friday, assuming he doesn't suffer a setback. He'll return to a utility role.

Elliot Johnson (knee) will play two more rehab games for Triple-A Durham Thursday and Friday before being reevaluated.

Assuming he doesn't suffer a setback, we would assume he'll be activated and available for the Rays over the weekend. He's been out since late May.

Rays manager Joe Maddon said Elliot Johnson (knee) likely won't be ready for activation from the disabled list on Wednesday as originally thought.

Maddon said Friday that it was "realistic" to expect the infielder back Wednesday, but evidently he'll need a few more days. Johnson is wearing a brace on the knee and is still getting used to it. He's also yet to test himself laterally.
