Indians general manager Chris Antonetti announced Saturday that Elliot Johnson has won a bench spot on the team's Opening Day roster.

The 30-year-old utilityman can attribute that roster spot to a strong Cactus League season where he slashed .350/.381/.650 with a pair of homers and eight RBI in 40 at-bats. He holds no fantasy value outside of insanely deep AL-only formats.

Elliot Johnson went 2-for-2 with a home run as the Indians defeated the Royals 12-6 on Thursday.

Johnson hit a solo shot off of Everett Teaford in the eighth inning. A non-roster invitee, Johnson is now hitting .429 in 21 Cactus League at-bats. The Indians, though, may want to pay more attention to his career .592 OPS.
Mar 13 - 7:09 PM

Elliot Johnson blasted a two-run home run for the Indians on Thursday.

It was Johnson's only hit in two at-bats, but it was a big one. It tied the game up at two apiece and become the first of four consecutive innings in which the Indians posted a crooked number. Johnson, a non-roster invitee, is trying to make the team as a utilityman.
Feb 27 - 6:41 PM

Indians signed INF Elliot Johnson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Johnson was non-tendered by the Braves in December after hitting .209/.255/.283 with two homers, 19 RBI, and 22 stolen bases in 111 games last season. The 29-year-old could be in the mix for a backup infielder job in the spring.

Braves non-tendered INF Elliot Johnson.

Johnson, 29, hit .209/.255/.283 with two homers, 19 RBI, and 22 stolen bases in 111 games this past season between the Royals and Braves. He is now free to sign with any team.

Elliot Johnson went 2-for-3 with a walk, triple and five RBI against the Phillies on Sunday.

Johnson entered the game with 14 RBI in 251 at-bats this season. He batted only .209 with two homers in 2013, but Johnson swiped 22 bags to add value in NL-only formats.

Elliot Johnson went 1-for-3 with a two-run triple against the Indians on Tuesday.

The new Braves infielder recorded the biggest hit of the night, driving in the game's only two runs. He's now 5-for-18 (.278) with three RBI since being claimed by the Braves on August 21.

Braves claimed INF Elliot Johnson off release waivers from the Royals.

The Royals cut ties with Johnson after he hit just .179/.218/.241 over 79 games this season, but the Braves need some infield help. He could make some starts at second base until Dan Uggla (eye surgery) is ready to return, after which he'll likely serve in a utility role.

Royals released INF Elliot Johnson.

Johnson was designated for assignment Thursday and went unclaimed on waivers. He was hitting just .179/.218/.241 over 79 games for Kansas City and will now look to sign with another team.

Royals designated INF Elliot Johnson for assignment.

Johnson was hitting .179/.218/.241 in 173 plate appearances this season for Kansas City. The 29-year-old seems likely to pass through waivers unclaimed.

Elliot Johnson went 0-for-4 and committed a key error at third base in the Royals' loss to the Marlins on Wednesday.

Johnson should be a goner as soon as Emilio Bonifacio joins the Royals. He's had just one hit in his last 52 at-bats, leaving him with a .179 average in 162 at-bats for the season.

Elliot Johnson finished 3-for-4 with a three-run homer against his old team Thursday in the win over the Rays.

The homer was Johnson's second of 2013 and his 12th in 571 career at-bats. Johnson entered the night 1-for-15 in June. He's been getting a fair amount of playing time over Chris Getz at second base and he could seize the job entirely with a hot streak, but he just isn't much of a threat offensively.
Thu, Jun 13, 2013 10:27:00 PM

Elliot Johnson has started four of the last five games at second base for the Royals.

Johnson is batting .400/.429/.550 over the last six games and will continue to play while he's hot. Chris Getz will still see plenty of time at second base, though. "He’s swinging the bat well and playing exceptional defense. He’s made some nice plays up the middle," manager Ned Yost said of Johnson. "But when (Chris Getz) Getzie gets hot, we’ll ride him. Our record with Getz in the lineup is well above .500 for the last two years. He does a lot of things, too."
