Angels sent OF Reggie Willits outright to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Willits batted an ugly .045/.192/.091 with one RBI across 22 games for the Angels earlier this season before being designated for assignment. He was a useful player back in 2007 during his rookie season with his speed and ability to draw walks, but Willits has done very little since.

Willits has picked up just one hit in 22 at-bats in his stints with the big club this season. He's played very sparingly and will now get more regular work at Triple-A. This clears a roster spot for Howie Kendrick, who will be activated from the DL Saturday.

He started in left field. He should play for Inland Empire through the weekend, with the Angels then making a decision on when to activate him early next week. He should be back no later than next weekend.

Willits has been sidelined since March 13, but recently began playing in some minor league games. Chris Pettit will take his place on the roster as the team's fifth outfielder, but Willits could be with the big club relatively soon.

Good news, although he is going to require a pinch-runner for his four at-bats. Willits is scheduled to run the bases on Friday and perhaps jump into games from there. He has been out since March 13 with a left calf strain and is still likely to begin the year on the disabled list.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia hinted Monday that Randy Willits' strained calf muscle might force the outfielder onto the disabled list to start the season.

"He’s working against the clock," Scioscia said. Such a move could mean adding Chris Pettit to the Opening Day roster as a short-term pinch-hitter and defensive replacement. Neither player is fantasy relevant.

Reggie Willits left Saturday's game with tightness in his left calf.

The outfielder suffered the ailment while trying to beat out an infield hit. It's not clear how long Willits might be out, but it doesn't sound like anything too serious.

Angels and OF Reggie Willits avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $775,000 contract.

Willits hit just .258/.341/.302 with only two steals over 159 at-bats in 2010, as he deal with nagging leg injuries that robbed him of his best asset. He made $625,000 this past season.
