Red Sox designated INF Nate Spears for assignment.

Spears was removed from the 25- and 40-man rosters in order to make room for Marlon Byrd. Should he pass through waivers unclaimed, it's likely that Spears will be assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Red Sox recalled INF Nate Spears from Triple-A Pawtucket

Spears will serve as a utility infielder for the Red Sox. Entering his age-26 season, he's no longer a prospect, but should be able to contribute defensively.

Red Sox sent INF Nate Spears outright to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Spears was designated for assignment on Tuesday after going 0-for-4 with a strikeout during a short stay in Boston. The 26-year-old infielder is far from a top prospect.

Nate Spears went 3-for-3 with a triple Tuesday for Mesa of the Arizona Fall League.

Spears, 23, was one of two players the Cubs picked up from the Orioles for Corey Patterson prior to the 2006 season. He finished at .299/.394/.458 for Double-A West Tenn this season. Like Mike Fontenot -- another second baseman traded between the two teams -- he's a smallish left-handed hitter with numbers that have tended to be more solid than spectacular. He's not taken very seriously as a potential regular, but like Fontenot, he could sneak up on people.

Cubs scquired infielder Nate Spears and LHP Carlos Perez from the Orioles for outfielder Corey Patterson.

Spears, a 20-year-old picked in the fifth round of the 2003 draft, hit .294/.349/.429 with eight steals in 445 AB in the Carolina League last season. With the potential to perhaps be an average regular second baseman, he was one of the Orioles' top 15 or so prospects. Perez wasn't, though he did strike out 146 batters in 151 1/3 IP for low Single-A Delmarva last season. Neither player is going to be of any help to the Cubs within the next couple of years.

Nate Spears went 6-for-7 with a home run, a triple and a walk in Single-A Frederick's doubleheader yesterday.

The 20-year-old Spears is batting .298/.354/.430 with eight steals in 423 AB in the Carolina League anytime soon. He's not going to unseat Brian Roberts anytime soon, but if Roberts gets hurt next year, it wouldn't be surprised to see him called up to fill in at second base.
