Anthony Swarzak was superb in a spot start Wednesday, holding the Indians to one run on two hits and a walk while striking out three in a 3-1 victory.
Swarzak, who was starting in place of Kyle Gibson (back) hadn’t thrown more than 52 pitches in an outing this season, but he was able to get his pitch count up to 74 Wednesday. He lowered his ERA for the year to 4.10 with the fine showing. Swarzak will be unavailable for a few days before likely returning to a long relief role, though it’s possible he’s earned another start if Gibson doesn’t recover as hoped. Jul 23 - 4:10 PM

It's his first since he fractured two ribs in an off-field incident with his teammates. "It was good," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He threw the ball over. That was good. He felt great. Anthony Swarzak will start Tuesday against the Blue Jays.

Samuel Deduno isn't ready to go after leaving his last outing with left eye irritation, and the Twins decided to go with Swarzak over Brian Duensing. "Swarzak is starting," Gardenhire said. "We didn't have to use him yesterday, so he's the most rested. So we'll run him out there and however innings it takes, and then we'll ad-lib from there."
