Christian Garcia (forearm) has been throwing from a mound and will begin incorporating curveballs on Thursday.
He'll then throw live batting practice after that before heading out on a rehab assignment, though it's not clear when he'll be ready for that. The Nats were planning on stretching Garcia out as a starter prior to his forearm injury, and they still might, but it depends on what the big club needs by the time the righty is healthy. Christian Garcia threw from 60 feet Wednesday and said afterwards that his forearm "feels great."

It's the second time he's played catch since suffering a partially torn tendon in his right forearm. Garcia is rebuilding his arm strength and hopes to be back on the mound by the end of the month. The Nationals are still planning to stretch the righty out as a starter once he's healthy.
Apr 5 - 10:42 AM

Christian Garcia (forearm) played a successful game of catch on Monday morning.

Garcia basically has to restart his spring throwing routine, so he's not going to be available for the first couple weeks of the 2013 regular season. He was officially placed on the 15-day disabled list on March 24.
Apr 1 - 10:37 AM

Nationals manager Davey Johnson said that Christian Garcia (forearm) could be cleared to throw as soon as Monday.

Garcia is currently in shutdown mode due to a partial tendon tear in his right forearm. Johnson would like to see him be stretched out as a starting pitcher, but they'll build his workload carefully to avoid a setback.
Mar 27 - 10:32 AM

Nationals placed RHP Christian Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm injury.

Garcia hasn't pitched at all this spring and likely won't be cleared to resume a throwing program until at least mid-April. The Nationals will use him in a middle relief role when he's ready to return.
Mar 24 - 5:18 PM

The Washington Post reports that Christian Garcia (forearm) will be shut down for two more weeks.

Garcia was hoping to resume a throwing program Monday, but he won't be cleared until at least April after visiting a Baltimore-based hand specialist this weekend. Manager Davey Johnson had already ruled him out for the start of the season, so he'll open 2013 on the disabled list and likely be sent to extended spring training before returning to the Nationals.
Mar 17 - 10:34 PM

Nationals manager Davey Johnson said Friday that there's "no possibility" Christian Garcia (forearm) will be ready to start the season.

It's not a surprise, but now we know for sure. Garcia has a partial tendon tear in his right forearm and is slated to resume throwing soon, but he simply doesn't have enough time. He should be ready early on in the season if he avoids setbacks.
Mar 15 - 11:22 AM

Christian Garcia (forearm) is slated to visit a hand/wrist specialist in Baltimore.

Garcia has yet to make his spring debut due to a partial tendon tear in his right forearm. It was recently reported that he would resume a throwing program this weekend, but he'll need to get good news from the specialist for that to become a reality. Chances are he will begin the season on the disabled list.
Mar 13 - 10:22 AM

Christian Garcia (forearm) is tentatively scheduled to resume a throwing program March 17.

Garcia has been shut down the last two weeks with a partial tendon tear in his right forearm. While it's good news that he could be cleared for throwing soon, Garcia's availability for the start of the regular season remains in question. He's a strong candidate to open 2013 on the disabled list.
Mar 9 - 11:18 AM

Christian Garcia will be shut down for at least another week after being diagnosed with a partial tendon tear in his right forearm.

This obviously puts Garcia's availability for Opening Day in question. The right-hander was dynamic down the stretch for the Nationals last season, posting a 2.13 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 15/2 K/BB ratio in 12 2/3 innings of relief. He had a lengthy history of arm issues in the minors, though, so this can't come as a total surprise.
Mar 3 - 10:27 AM

The Nationals plan to shut down Christian Garcia (forearm) for the next two weeks.

Garcia will be sidelined for at least 10-14 days, though it's possible he could be out longer. While the Nationals don't believe it's anything serious, he'll continue to be rested as a precautionary measure. If all goes well, Garcia could return to his throwing program by early March.
Feb 24 - 10:13 AM

Mark Zuckerman of CSN Washington reports that Christian Garcia is only dealing with a strained right forearm.

That was the initial diagnosis, but he's now waiting on a second opinion. The injury isn't elbow-related and the Nationals don't believe it's anything serious. Garcia will continue to be rested as a precautionary measure and could return to his throwing program as early as next week.
Feb 23 - 10:40 AM

Christian Garcia will receive a second opinion on his strained right forearm.

Garcia will be sidelined for at least the next few days, though it's possible it will be longer if the second doctor finds something else. The right-hander has had three elbow surgeries in his career, including two of the Tommy John variety, but he's confident that the ailment isn't related to the elbow this time.
Feb 22 - 3:36 PM

Christian Garcia is expected to be shut down for a few days due to a strained right forearm.

The condition isn't elbow-related, as Garcia is feeling tightness close to his wrist. The Nationals are considering the right-hander day-to-day at the moment, but with his injury history, even a minor ailment is noteworthy.
Feb 22 - 9:59 AM

Christian Garcia is not dealing with appendicitis.

Garcia has been dealing with discomfort in his abdomen over the past couple of days, so he was sent for tests to rule out the possibility. The young right-hander is still waiting on the diagnosis for his wrist/forearm, but he's confident it's not serious.
