Christian Garcia (forearm) has been throwing from a mound and will begin incorporating curveballs on Thursday.
He'll then throw live batting practice after that before heading out on a rehab assignment, though it's not clear when he'll be ready for that. The Nats were planning on stretching Garcia out as a starter prior to his forearm injury, and they still might, but it depends on what the big club needs by the time the righty is healthy. Christian Garcia threw from 60 feet Wednesday and said afterwards that his forearm "feels great."

It's the second time he's played catch since suffering a partially torn tendon in his right forearm. Garcia is rebuilding his arm strength and hopes to be back on the mound by the end of the month. The Nationals are still planning to stretch the righty out as a starter once he's healthy.

Garcia basically has to restart his spring throwing routine, so he's not going to be available for the first couple weeks of the 2013 regular season. He was officially placed on the 15-day disabled list on March 24.

Garcia is currently in shutdown mode due to a partial tendon tear in his right forearm. Johnson would like to see him be stretched out as a starting pitcher, but they'll build his workload carefully to avoid a setback.

The Washington Post reports that Christian Garcia (forearm) will be shut down for two more weeks.

Garcia was hoping to resume a throwing program Monday, but he won't be cleared until at least April after visiting a Baltimore-based hand specialist this weekend. Manager Davey Johnson had already ruled him out for the start of the season, so he'll open 2013 on the disabled list and likely be sent to extended spring training before returning to the Nationals.

It's not a surprise, but now we know for sure. Garcia has a partial tendon tear in his right forearm and is slated to resume throwing soon, but he simply doesn't have enough time. He should be ready early on in the season if he avoids setbacks.

Christian Garcia will be shut down for at least another week after being diagnosed with a partial tendon tear in his right forearm.

This obviously puts Garcia's availability for Opening Day in question. The right-hander was dynamic down the stretch for the Nationals last season, posting a 2.13 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 15/2 K/BB ratio in 12 2/3 innings of relief. He had a lengthy history of arm issues in the minors, though, so this can't come as a total surprise.

That was the initial diagnosis, but he's now waiting on a second opinion. The injury isn't elbow-related and the Nationals don't believe it's anything serious. Garcia will continue to be rested as a precautionary measure and could return to his throwing program as early as next week.
