Colin Balester has elected free agency.

The 26-year-old right-hander was acquired by the Tigers last offseason in exchange for Ryan Perry, but struggled to the tune of a 6.50 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 12/11 K/BB ratio over 18 innings before being banished to Triple-A Toledo for the remainder of the summer. He shouldn't have a problem securing a spring training invite on the open market.

Collin Balester walked his first batter of the spring Monday, but he pitched another scoreless inning against the Phillies.

Balester has allowed just one run in eight innings. He was expected to have a bullpen spot regardless, since he's out of options, but it doesn't seem like it's made him complacent.

Balester, 25, posted a 4.54 ERA over 23 relief appearances with the Nationals this past season, despite a very solid 34/14 K/BB ratio over 35 2/3 innings. He has pitched much better since being converted from a starter to a reliever and should be a nice addition to the middle innings for Detroit.

Balester was designated for assignment earlier this week, but he was expected to remain in the organization all along. Players almost always clear under optional waivers, so Balester was placed back on the 40-man roster and has already reported to Triple-A Syracuse.

The Nationals are expected to option right-hander Collin Balester to the minors to make room for Tuesday's starter Ross Detwiler.

The move isn't official yet, but Balester was packing his bags following Monday's win over the Cubs. The 25-year-old threw a season-high 76 pitches over four innings of relief Sunday, so he likely needs a couple days of rest anyway.

The Nationals haven't announced a corresponding roster move. The 25-year-old right-hander has compiled an impressive 3.29 ERA and 29/11 K/BB ratio over 25 innings at the Triple-A level this season. This will his third stint with the Nats this season, though he has only made three appearances.

It could be a short stay, as the Nationals will call up Yunesky Maya to start Sunday in place of the injured Tom Gorzelanny. Balester has posted a 3.71 ERA while striking out over a batter per inning for Syracuse. He gave up three runs over 3 1/3 innings earlier this season for the Nats.
