Nationals signed INF Brendan Ryan to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Ryan, who turns 35 in March, was limited to 47 games with the Yankees in 2015 due to injury and batted just .229/.275/.333 over 103 plate appearances. The skilled defender will try to win a utility infielder job in the spring. Feb 2 - 1:56 PM

Cubs released INF Brendan Ryan.

Ryan was just acquired last week as the player to be named later in the Starlin Castro trade. It appears that he was just included for the Cubs to cover his $1 million salary for 2016. The veteran infielder batted .229/.275/.333 over 103 plate appearances with the Yankees this season, but he has a strong defensive reputation and should find another opportunity soon.

Cubs acquired INF Brendan Ryan from the Yankees to complete an earlier trade.

Ryan was the player to be named later in the December 8 trade that sent Starlin Castro to the Yankees. The infielder has zero fantasy appeal but is a defensive whiz who will likely stick on the team's 25-man roster. He batted just .229/.275/.333 over 103 plate appearances with the Yankees last season.

INF Brendan Ryan exercised his $1 million player option for 2016.

Ryan will be back for his fourth season with the Yankees. The skilled defender was limited to just 47 games in 2015 due to injury and batted just .229/.275/.333 over 103 plate appearances. But his mustache was pretty cool.

Brendan Ryan had two RBI doubles -- both coming in the second inning -- and finished 2-for-6 with three RBI in a win over the Rangers on Tuesday.

The Yankees batted around in an 11-run second inning, with Ryan providing a two-run double early before capping the scoring with another RBI double later in the inning. The offensive performance was unusual for Ryan, who had just eight RBI in 49 games all of last season. Ryan is hitting a deceptive .276/.323/.517 through 11 games this year.

Yankees activated INF Brendan Ryan from the 15-day disabled list.

Ryan missed the last few weeks with a back malady. He's been limited to just six games this season due to injury.

Yankees placed INF Brendan Ryan on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 22, with a right thoracic strain.

It's not clear at this point whether thoracic outlet surgery might be an option for Ryan. The slick-fielding infielder has been limited to just six games this season due to injury.

Yankees activated INF Brendan Ryan from the 60-day disabled list.

Ryan is ready to make his season debut after missing the first two-plus months with a strained right calf. He could see a good amount of playing time at shortstop versus left-handers.

Brendan Ryan (calf) began a rehab assignment with High-A Tampa on Sunday.

Ryan has been out all season with a Grade 2 right calf strain. He should finally be ready for activation relatively soon if he can avoid setbacks.

Yankees transferred INF Brendan Ryan from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Jacob Lindgren. Ryan has been out all season with a strained calf.

Brendan Ryan (calf) left a rehab game Thursday due to heat exhaustion.

It was presumably an extended spring training game, as he has yet to begin an official minor league rehab assignment. Ryan already had a setback with his hamstring while working his way back from a Grade 2 calf strain, but heat exhaustion likely won't keep him sidelined for long.

Brendan Ryan (calf) took batting practice and fielded grounders on Tuesday.

Ryan is working his way back from a Grade 2 right calf strain. The Yankees haven't revealed a timetable for his return, but it appears he's starting to make some progress. Gregorio Petit is currently filling in as the team's utility infielder.

Yankees placed INF Brendan Ryan on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 1, with a Grade 2 right calf strain.

Ryan suffered the injury in Wednesday's Cactus League game. There's no current timetable for his recovery, but a calf injury of that degree is going to take some time to heal. The Yankees acquired Gregorio Petit from the Astros to help shore up their infield depth.

An MRI showed Brendan Ryan has a Grade 2 right calf strain.

That's pretty serious, and the severity was underlined by the Yankees' expedience in acquiring shortstop Gregorio Petit from the Astros. Ryan will start the year on the disabled list, and it's unclear at this point how long the strain will keep him sidelined.

Brendan Ryan is likely to begin the season on the disabled list after suffering a calf strain Wednesday.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he would be "very surprised" if Ryan is ready for the season opener after being helped off the field in the sixth inning of Wednesday's Grapefruit League game. Ryan will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the strain. He was slated to be the primary backup to shortstop Didi Gregorius, so while the injury affects the Yankees it doesn't have much bearing on fantasy.
