Rafael Perez (shoulder) pitched an inning this past weekend in an extended spring training game.

"He was fine," Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said Sunday. "His arm strength is still not quite where it needs to be, but there were no setbacks." Perez signed a minor league contract with Minnesota this offseason. He has an opt-out clause for May 1.

It will be the first time he's faced hitters since undergoing shoulder surgery last September. A timetable for Perez's return remains up in the air. Samuel Deduno (groin) and Rich Harden (shoulder) will follow Perez with live BP sessions on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Rafael Perez (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Sunday.

It was his first of the spring, as he's dealt with some soreness in his surgically-repaired left shoulder. Perez obviously won't be ready for the start of the season and should begin the year in extended spring training. The lefty entered camp as a possible candidate for the rotation, but it's not clear whether the club will use him as a starter or reliever once he's healthy.

Twins general manager Terry Ryan has indicated that Rafael Perez is dealing with some soreness in his surgically-repaired left shoulder.

It sounds like normal post-op soreness, but it's keeping Perez from throwing off a mound. The southpaw is currently long-tossing from 90 feet. Perez entered camp as a possible candidate for the rotation, but at this point he'd probably be lucky to win a long relief job.

Perez has never started a game in the major leagues, but he has done it in the minors and the Twins are going to give him a shot to shine in that role this spring. The 30-year-old lefty is already recovered from his September shoulder surgery. He owns a 3.64 career MLB ERA.

MLB.com's Jordan Bastian lists Rafael Perez as a non-tender candidate.

Bastian also considers Jack Hannahan, Brent Lillibridge, and Kevin Slowey as possibilities to become free agents. Perez appeared in just eight games in 2012 and underwent shoulder surgery this offseason. Hannahan, 32, is likely to be back on a reduced contract.

Perez had already been ruled out for the rest of the season, and now his offseason routine may be slightly affected. But the Indians are optimistic that the left-hander will be close to full health by spring training.

Rafael Perez (ankle) will throw a simulated game sometime next week.

Perez has been on the DL since late April with a strained left lat muscle but has recently been shut down with an ankle injury that he suffered while on a rehab assignment. The Indians are hopeful that he'll return sometime this month.
