Rangers signed INF Cliff Pennington to a minor league contract.
Pennington wasn't out of work for long after exercising the opt-out clause in his deal with the Reds earlier on Friday afternoon. He'll add depth for the Rangers and given all of the injuries they have suffered in their infield, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get a call to the big leagues in relatively short order. Reds sent INF Cliff Pennington outright to Triple-A Louisville.

The veteran infielder passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as infield depth for the Reds at Triple-A. He hit just .138 (4-for-29) during his time filling in for the injured Eugenio Suarez.
Apr 28 - 1:37 PM

Reds optioned INF Cliff Pennington to Triple-A Louisville.

The move clears a 25-man roster spot for Eugenio Suarez, who was activated off the disabled list Thursday morning. Pennington went 4-for-29 (.138) with zero extra-base hits in four weeks with Cincinnati.
Apr 26 - 10:35 AM

Cliff Pennington went 0-for-3 as the Reds' third baseman in Tuesday's loss to the Brewers.

You simply can't measure what Pennington brings to the Reds as Eugenio Suarez's replacement at third base. Since it won't result in hits (three this year), RBI (zero this year), runs scored (zero this year), you'll just have to take our word for it. But the presence, the professionalism, the je ne sais quoi... it can't be beat.

Mark Sheldon of MLB.com writes that Cliff Pennington and Phil Gosselin are the likely replacements for Eugenio Suarez (thumb) at third base.

It's underwhelming, we know. It's worth noting that Alex Blandino was pulled from a game in Triple-A on Sunday, so he's also in the mix. However, it appears that top prospect Nick Senzel is not a consideration at this time. There are service time issues at play, but the Reds might also want him to continue to focus on other positions.

Cliff Pennington is hitting second and starting at shortstop on Monday against the Cubs.

Jose Peraza gets the day off, as does Adam Duvall for the Reds. The full lineup for Cincinnati goes: Jesse Winker LF, Pennington SS, Joey Votto 1B, Scooter Gennett 2B, Eugenio Suarez 3B, Scott Schebler RF, Tucker Barnhart C, Billy Hamilton CF, and Tyler Mahle on the bump and hitting ninth.

Reds purchased the contract of INF Cliff Pennington from Triple-A Louisville.

Pennington made the Reds as a non-roster player in camp. He'll serve in a utility role and offers no fantasy value.
Mar 29 - 12:13 PM

Reds signed INF Cliff Pennington to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

It's a split contract that will pay him a $1.5 million salary if he makes the Reds' major league roster and far less if he is relegated to Triple-A Louisville. Pennington batted just .235/.306/.330 with three home runs over 87 games with the Angels in 2017, but he can play all around the infield defensively.
Feb 15 - 12:17 PM

Cliff Pennington hit a grand slam in the seventh to lead the Angels past the A's 10-8 on Wednesday.

Pennington was used to give Andrelton Simmons a rare day off and shined, delivering his first grand slam in 10 major league seasons to complete a comeback from what had been an 8-3 deficit. Pennington also had a single in the contest. The homer was his third, matching his high total since 2012.

Cliff Pennington smacked a rare home run Tuesday against the Nationals.

Pennington took Brandon Kintzler deep in the eighth inning in what amounted to the only run the Angels were able to muster. It was the veteran utility player's second home run on the season and just his 35th in over 3,000 plate appearances in the majors.

Cliff Pennington went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored in Thursday's win over the Yankees.

Pennington got the start at second base and made the most of it, also walking in the game to reach in all four of his plate appearances. Thursday was the first game this year in which he's scored multiple runs in a game. Through 41 games, the 33-year-old is hitting .253/.333/.299 while playing three different infield spots for the Halos.

Cliff Pennington belted a solo home run in three at-bats against the Royals.

Pennington connected for a solo homer off of good friend Ian Kennedy to provide the only offense for the Halos. There haven't been many highlights for Pennington since May 12, as he entered play with just seven hits (all singles) over the past 43 at-bats, dropping his average from .275 to .222 since May 13.

Cliff Pennington finished 2-for-3 with a walk, run scored and RBI in Wednesday's loss against the Mariners.

Pennington had a solid night at the dish on Wednesday, but his playing time is far too sporadic to warrant fantasy consideration in most formats.
Thu, May 4, 2017 02:47:00 AM

Cliff Pennington went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit, walk-off RBI single to end Sunday's win over the Mariners.

Pennington sat patiently on the bench as the Mariners clawed their way back from a 9-3 ninth-inning deficit before getting a chance to play hero. Pinch-hitting for Andrelton Simmons with two outs in the frame, the veteran infielder notched an RBI single against Mariners closer Edwin Diaz to cap off the Angels' improbable victory.
