Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart said Tuesday that he plans to tender a contract to Cliff Pennington.
Pennington is arbitration-eligible for the final time this winter after recently finishing a two-year, $5 million contract. The 30-year-old batted .254/.340/.350 with two home runs and 10 RBI over 68 games this season and Stewart still considers him a useful piece for the infield. Nov 11 - 3:02 PM

Cliff Pennington had the only two hits for the Diamondbacks Sunday, going 2-for-3 in a loss to the Cardinals.

Pennington's two singles were all the Diamondbacks could muster against a slew of pitchers near the end of the Cardinals' roster. A left thumb injury cost Pennington two months, and the shortstop finishes the year batting .254 with six stolen bases.
Sep 28 - 8:28 PM

Cliff Pennington went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in Friday's win over the Marlins.

It was his first home run since May 1, 2013. The 30-year-old is hitting .360 (9-for-25) since returning from thumb surgery, but he's strictly an NL-only play in fantasy leagues.
Aug 15 - 10:36 PM

Diamondbacks activated INF Cliff Pennington from the 15-day disabled list.

Pennington missed over two months following early-June surgery to repair a sprained ligament in his left thumb. He will serve as infield depth down the stretch.
Aug 6 - 4:56 PM

Cliff Pennington (thumb) began a rehab assignment with the Arizona League Diamondbacks on Saturday.

He shouldn't need too many rehab games before being activated. Pennington has been on the shelf for nearly two months with a sprained ligament in his left thumb.
Jul 27 - 9:37 AM

Cliff Pennington needs surgery to repair a sprained ligament in his left thumb and is expected to be sidelined for two months.

Pennington initially suffered the injury last week and was finally put on the DL Tuesday when he didn't experience any improvement. Didi Gregorius took his place on the active roster.
Jun 3 - 8:02 PM

Diamondbacks placed INF Cliff Pennington on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ligament in his left thumb.

Pennington initially injured the thumb last week, but hasn't seen much improvement over the past few days. The Diamondbacks have called up Didi Gregorius to take his place on the active roster.
Jun 3 - 12:24 PM

Cliff Pennington (thumb) finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his return to action Sunday.

Pennington had been out since last Wednesday with a jammed left thumb. The veteran utility infielder is batting just .243/.325/.324 in 33 games this season.
Jun 2 - 8:15 AM

Cliff Pennington was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup with a minor left thumb injury.

The thumb got hurt when Everth Cabrera slid into second base in the first inning of Tuesday's game. Pennington will take the day, but it doesn't sound like he'll miss any significant time. Chris Ownings was inserted into the lineup in Pennington's place on Wednesday.
May 28 - 6:25 PM

Cliff Pennington had a big day at the plate against the Dodgers on Wednesday, going 3-for-3 with two runs batted in.

Pennington finished a homer short of the cycle. He drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second and tripled home a run in the sixth. Pennington is hoping to make the team as a back-up infielder. He doesn't offer much for fantasy purposes when he's not playing every day.
Mar 12 - 6:25 PM

Cliff Pennington will be away from the Diamondbacks all week for the birth of his second child.

Pennington flew home from the Diamondbacks' road trip on Sunday and won't return to action until Friday night's series opener against the Rockies in Arizona. The 29-year-old infielder is hitting .235/.306/.296.

Cliff Pennington went 2-for-7 with a go-ahead RBI single in a 5-4 win over the Mets in 15 innings on Thursday.

The Mets got game-tying home runs in both the 13th and 14th innings, but Pennington's RBI single off Scott Rice in the 15th put the Diamondbacks ahead for good. It was his first RBI since June 15. The 29-year-old infielder is batting just .230/.297/.290 in 61 games this season and should be ignored in most fantasy leagues.

Cliff Pennington had a three-run homer and an RBI double in a losing cause Wednesday against the Giants.

Pennington had a .205 average and three RBI this season before busting out tonight. He's in line to have his playing time reduced when Didi Gregorius returns from a concussion, but now that he's swinging better, he could get some playing time at second base.

Cliff Pennington was ejected from Saturday's game against the Dodgers for arguing a called third strike.

Pennington slammed his bat on the plate, causing it to splinter. He's batting .238/.313/.262 on the season.

Cliff Pennington's single off Cardinals' reliever Fernando Salas scored Jason Kubel to send the Diamondbacks to a 10-9, 16th-inning victory Wednesday, the longest contest in Chase Field history.

The game-winner was Pennington's third hit of the game. He also walked twice in eight plate appearances Wednesday. The 28-year-old didn't enter the contest favored to play hero after going 0-for-8 at the dish over the first two games of the season. Pennington's got a great glove, but not much bat, entering Opening Day a .249/.313/.356 career batter who limped to a .589 OPS in 2012.
