Cliff Pennington had a three-run homer and an RBI double in a losing cause Wednesday against the Giants.
Pennington had a .205 average and three RBI this season before busting out tonight. He's in line to have his playing time reduced when Didi Gregorius returns from a concussion, but now that he's swinging better, he could get some playing time at second base. May 2 - 1:31 AM

Cliff Pennington was ejected from Saturday's game against the Dodgers for arguing a called third strike.

Pennington slammed his bat on the plate, causing it to splinter. He's batting .238/.313/.262 on the season.

Cliff Pennington's single off Cardinals' reliever Fernando Salas scored Jason Kubel to send the Diamondbacks to a 10-9, 16th-inning victory Wednesday, the longest contest in Chase Field history.

The game-winner was Pennington's third hit of the game. He also walked twice in eight plate appearances Wednesday. The 28-year-old didn't enter the contest favored to play hero after going 0-for-8 at the dish over the first two games of the season. Pennington's got a great glove, but not much bat, entering Opening Day a .249/.313/.356 career batter who limped to a .589 OPS in 2012.

Diamondbacks avoided arbitration with SS Cliff Pennington by agreeing to a two-year, $5 million contract.

The deal buys out Pennington's first two arbitration years. Pennington offers solid defense at shortstop, he's just a .249/.313/.356 career hitter and sported an ugly .589 OPS last season. The 28-year-old will compete with Didi Gregorius for the starting job at short this spring.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Diamondbacks are discussing a two-year deal with Cliff Pennington's agent.

The two sides were $1 million apart when arbitration figures were exchanged last week, but it sounds like Arizona would prefer to buy out the shortstop's first two arbitration years. Pennington will compete with Didi Gregorius for the starting job at short this spring.
Jan 22 - 8:46 PM

Cliff Pennington requested $2.8 million and was offered $1.8 million from the Diamondbacks when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

Pennington seems slated to earn somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.3 million in his debut season with the D'Backs. With the recent acquisition of Didi Gregorius, the light-hitting Pennington will have to earn the starting shortstop position this spring.

Diamondbacks acquired INFs Cliff Pennington and Yordy Cabrera from the Athletics for OF Chris Young.

Pennington solves the Diamondbacks' problem at shortstop for 2013. He's far from a strong hitter, but the 28-year-old plays good defense and should see significant offensive improvement moving from the O.Co Coliseum to Chase Field. Pennington is arbitration-eligible this winter.

Cliff Pennington went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Sunday's win over the Yankees.

A rare big day at the plate for the light-hitting infielder. Pennington's two-run blast in the second extended the A's lead to 3-0, and his RBI single in the sixth put the team ahead for good. He's now batting .219 for the season.

Cliff Pennington went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer versus the Indians on Thursday.

And then was removed for a pinch-hitter. Pennington, now a part-time second baseman with Stephen Drew at shortstop, collected his first homer since June 28. It was just his second multihit game since the All-Star break.

Cliff Pennington and Adam Rosales will share the starting job at second base for the Athletics following the demotion of Jemile Weeks.

Rosales was going to be kept around no matter what for his versatility, and the A's decided to hold on to Pennington instead of Weeks. Neither guy would be much of a fantasy option even with an everyday job, so they're barely rosterable even in AL-only leagues since they're splitting time.

Athletics activated SS Cliff Pennington from the 15-day disabled list.

Pennington went 5-for-11 (.455) with three walks on his three-game rehab assignment at Triple-A Sacramento. The A's were going to have him spend a week on the farm, but he's clearly already back in the groove offensively.

Cliff Pennington's (elbow) rehab assignment could be a lengthy one.

The A's not only want to make sure Pennington is healthy, but they'd like for him to get in a groove at the plate before being activated. He's off to a good start at Triple-A Sacramento, picking up three hits in his first seven at-bats. In the meantime, the A's will continue to go with a combination of Adam Rosales, Eric Sogard and Brandon Hicks at shortstop.

Cliff Pennington (elbow) is scheduled to hit on the field Thursday.

Barring any setbacks, he will begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Sacramento. The 28-year-old shortstop shouldn't need many games to get ready.

Cliff Pennington (elbow) hit in the cage Tuesday and is nearing a rehab assignment.

Out since mid-July with left elbow tendinitis, Pennington shouldn't have to play in many rehab games. An early August return is likely.

Cliff Pennington (elbow) hit off a tee Sunday for the first time since landing on the disabled list.

The A's still aren't sure on a timetable for the 28-year-old shortstop, but he's obviously getting closer. Brandon Hicks and Eric Sogard will continue to fill in.
