Cubs re-signed RHP Zach Putnam to a minor league contract.
A fifth-round pick in 2008, Putnam was non-tendered by the Cubs after being claimed off waivers in early November. The 25-year-old appeared in just two games with the Rockies last season, but posted a 4.15 ERA with 49 strikeouts over 60 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level. Putnam, a 5th round pick from the 2008 draft, was claimed off of waivers from the Rockies in early November. He should have no problem finding a team willing to give him a shot at a middle relief job during the spring.

Putnam has allowed three hits and a walk (but no runs) in two appearances this season with the big-league Rockies. He should be given another shot later this summer.

He'll be the 26th player for Wednesday's doubleheader against the Pirates. Putnam, who was acquired from the Indians in the Kevin Slowey deal, had a 1.23 ERA and 11/3 K/BB ratio over 7 1/3 innings with the Sky Sox.

MLB's new collective bargaining agreement allows teams to carry 26 players for a traditional doubleheader, so the Rockies will take advantage Wednesday vs. the Pirates. Putnam, 24, has registered a 1.23 ERA in 7 1/3 innings this season at Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Putnam posted a 3.65 ERA and 68/23 K/BB ratio over 69 innings in relief with Triple-A Columbus in the Indians organization last season. He'll have a shot to crack the big league roster at some point this season. The Rockies also, among other moves, sent top prospect Nolan Arenado to minor league camp.

Putnam, who was acquired from the Indians for Kevin Slowey in January, has been sidelined for the past week with a tender elbow. Barring any setbacks, the 24-year-old right-hander could be in the mix for one of the final two spots in the Rockies' bullpen.

Rockies acquired RHP Zach Putnam from the Indians for RHP Kevin Slowey and cash considerations.

The Rockies have built up plenty of starting pitching depth this offseason, so they did well to sell from a strength. Besides, Slowey was a very poor fit for Coors Field. Putnam made eight relief appearances with the Indians last season as a September call-up after posting a 3.65 ERA and 68/23 K/BB ratio over 69 innings in relief with Triple-A Columbus. The 24-year-old right-hander was recently ranked as the Indians' No. 10 prospect by Baseball America. He should be ready to contribute in the Rockies' bullpen in 2012.

Indians purchased the contract of RHP Zach Putnam from Triple-A Columbus.

Putnam was 6-3 with a 3.65 ERA over 44 relief appearances for Columbus this season. He has a career 3.83 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over four minor league seasons. He'll function as low-leverage bullpen insurance for the Indians as the season winds down.
