Reds released RHP Dallas Buck.
Buck was the last remaining piece in the Reds' system from the Adam Dunn trade. The right-hander posted a 4.91 minor league ERA in 2009, a 6.41 mark in 2010, and was rocking a 8.50 ERA in the minors this season. Another organization might gamble on him because he's only 26, but he can safely be labeled as a bust. Sat, May 21, 2011 05:22:00 PM

Reds acquired RHP Dallas Buck and two players to be named later from the Diamondbacks in exchange for outfielder Adam Dunn and cash.

A first-round talent who fell to the third round of the 2006 draft because of elbow problems, Buck underwent Tommy John surgery last season and returned to the mound in June. He has a 3.55 ERA and 28/11 K/BB ratio in 50 2/3 innings at Single-A. Buck is likely several years from the majors and hasn't shown enough yet to project as more than a mid-rotation starter, so Reds fans better hope that the two players to be named later are substantial. Rather than trading Dunn, the Reds could have let him walk as a free agent and likely netted a pair of first-round picks as compensation.

Dallas Buck made his first start back from Tommy John surgery on Sunday and allowed four runs in five innings for low Single-A South Bend.

Buch, a 2006 third-round pick, underwent surgery last July. He'll probably move up to Single-A Visalia next month, but he may not reach Double-A until 2009.

Diamondbacks prospect Dallas Buck will undergo Tommy John surgery this month.

It's been rumored that he'd need the procedure since before he was drafted. Buck, who helped lead Oregon State to the NCAA championship in 2006, left his June 27 start at Single-A Visalia with elbow pain. He will likely miss most of the 2008 season.

Dallas Buck fanned 11 while allowing an unearned run in six innings Friday for Single-A Visalia.

Buck, a 2006 third-round pick, nearly underwent Tommy John surgery for a partially torn UCL last July. He elected for rehab instead, but he still might need the procedure at some point.

2006 third-round pick Dallas Buck is mulling a decision to undergo Tommy John elbow surgery.

Buck indicated he'd decide within a week. Buck, a product of Oregon State, entered the year as first-round material, but his velocity declined as a junior, though he remained effective anyway. The Diamondbacks seem to be in favor of surgery. "We didn’t draft Dallas for 2007," GM Josh Byrnes said. "We drafted him for a long, healthy, productive career."

The Diamondbacks selected Oregon State RHP Dallas Buck with the 86th pick in the 2006 draft.

He's certainly a better bet than Jason Neighborgall, last year's third-round gamble. Buck entered the year as one of the top prospects for the draft after finishing 2005 at 12-1 with a 2.09 ERA. He was plenty effective again this year, going 11-2 with a 3.01 ERA, but his velocity dropped and still hasn't come back. The Diamondbacks will probably rest him and hope that be bounces back to the 90-92 mph range next year.
