Rockies optioned RHP Chris Volstad to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Volstad made the Opening Day roster after a strong spring, but he owns an ugly 8.53 ERA through his first 6 1/3 innings this season. The Rockies have added left-hander Josh Outman to their bullpen in a corresponding roster move. Apr 19 - 6:08 PM

Rockies purchased the contract of RHP Chris Volstad from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Volstad earns the final spot in the Rockies' Opening Day bullpen by posting a 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 4/0 K/BB ratio over 12 innings in the spring. With the pitching struggles that they have had in recent years, having another option in the bullpen capable of throwing multiple innings is a wise decision.

The Denver Post's Troy Renck hears that Chris Volstad has a "slight edge" over Manny Corpas for the final spot in the Rockies' bullpen.

Volstad entered camp hoping to be part of the rotation, but, given how he's been used, it was clear that he was never really in contention to crack the starting five. He's put up a 3.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 12 spring innings, though, which appears will be good enough to land a long relief gig.

Chris Volstad tossed two scoreless innings Monday afternoon against the Rangers.

Volstad gave up two hits and no walks and didn't notch any strikeouts. He benefitted from a pair of double plays turned behind him. After posting a 6.31 ERA over 21 starts with the Cubs last season, he'll need a big spring in order to secure a rotation spot.
Feb 25 - 5:50 PM

Rockies signed RHP Chris Volstad to a minor league contract.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the deal has a total value of $1.5 million. Volstad, who had a career-worst 6.31 ERA in 21 starts with the Cubs last season, will compete for a spot in Colorado's starting rotation. After years of underperforming, he's doubtful to suddenly find success pitching at hitter-friendly Coors Field, but it's a low-risk signing for the Rockies.

Chris Volstad has elected to become a free agent.

The Royals designated Volstad for assignment earlier this month -- just weeks after claiming him off waivers from the Cubs. He never threw a pitch for Kansas City.

Royals designated RHP Chris Volstad for assignment.

Volstad was claimed off waivers from the Cubs in late-October, but he wasn't really needed after the Royals acquired Ervin Santana and re-signed Jeremy Guthrie. The 26-year-old right-hander had a terrible 6.31 ERA in 21 starts this season while making $2.65 millon, so he isn't worth the raise he figured to make in arbitration, but he shouldn't have trouble attracting interest as a free agent.

Royals claimed RHP Chris Volstad off waivers from the Cubs.

Volstad was highly-ineffective in 21 starts with the Cubs last season. Entering his age-26 campaign, he still holds value as a sixth starter. After making $2.65 million in 2012, Volstad seems likely to be non-tendered and sign for the league minimum this winter.

Chris Volstad pitched well in his final start of the season Tuesday, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits in his seven innings of work.

Volstad fanned six without walking a batter. Jason Castro belted a solo homer in the second inning to get the Astros on the board, and an unearned tally would be added later in the frame. Volstad completes a nightmarish season with a 3-12 record, 6.31 ERA and 61/43 K/BB ratio over 111 1/3 innings.

Chris Volstad struggled again in Friday’s no-decision against the Cardinals, surrendering three runs on six hits in his five innings of work.

Volstad also issued three walks on the afternoon without recording a strikeout. He needed 116 pitches to battle through five innings, and hasn’t lasted to the sixth inning in any of his last five outings. He’ll take a disappointing 3-10 record, 6.22 ERA and 55/43 K/BB into Thursday’s start against the Rockies in Colorado.

Chris Volstad tossed five innings of one-run ball Monday in a win over the Astros.

Volstad walked five and threw just 56 out of 99 pitches for strikes, but limited the light-hitting Astros to just four hits. The only run scored on an RBI single by Jason Castro in the bottom of the fourth. Volstad has now won three out of his last four starts after going winless in 24 straight. He'll get the Pirates this weekend, but shouldn't be trusted in fantasy leagues.

Chris Volstad surrendered five earned runs in five innings Wednesday in a loss to the Nationals.

Volstad yielded nine hits -- three of which were home runs -- and walked four Washington batters. He's been a major disappointment in his short time with the Cubs and is now sporting a brutal 6.23 ERA and 1.53 WHIP on the year. The tall right-hander holds zero fantasy value.

Chris Volstad finally earned his first win of the season in Sunday's 5-0, rain-shortened victory over the Rockies, allowing just three hits in 6 2/3 innings.

The game was called after eight innings. Volstad struck out three and walked three in notching his first victory in 14 starts as a Cub. Despite the rare good afternoon, however, he's still the owner of a 6.28 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 44/24 K/BB ratio through 76 innings. He won't be worth streaming against the Giants in Chicago on Friday.

Chris Volstad took a no-decision in Sunday's loss to the Reds, allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings of work.

He struck out four and walked one. Although he remains the owner of a horrendous 6.88 ERA, Volstad has actually managed to keep the Cubs in each of his four starts since rejoining the rotation on August 4, posting a 4.88 ERA across 24 innings of work. Hardly stellar, but enough to put him back on the radar in exceptionally deep NL-only leagues. He'll get the Rockies at home next weekend.

Chris Volstad gave up four runs over five innings Tuesday in a loss to the Astros.

Volstad was touched up for eight hits while walking none and striking out three. The big blow was a long-run three-run homer to Brett Wallace in the top of the third. The 25-year-old right-hander has been better since returning from the minors earlier this month, but that's not saying much. He still owns a 6.96 ERA on the year and is winless over his last 23 starts dating back to last season.
