Rangers prospect Kasey Kiker opened the minor league season on the disabled list because of a sore shoulder.

The Rangers were extra careful with Kiker last year, limiting the left-hander to 20 starts and 96 innings. Still, he developed the sore shoulder this spring anyway. He'll pitch for high-A Bakersfield once healthy.

Kasey Kiker pitched six scoreless innings and struck out seven Wednesday for low Single-A Clinton.

Kiker, who spent the first six weeks of the season in extended spring training, is 3-2 with a 2.25 ERA, 34 H and 58/17 K/BB in 44 IP. The 2006 first-round pick seems poised to move relatively quickly for a high school product.

Kasey Kiker struck out nine in five innings of one-hit ball Monday for low Single-A Clinton.

The 12th overall pick in the 2006 draft was making his season debut after spending time in extended spring training. The Rangers didn't want him throwing 130-150 innings in his age-19 season.

The Rangers selected LHP Kasey Kiker with the 12th overall pick in the 2006 draft.

Considered one of the top high school pitchers available in the draft, Kiker was tagged with the dreaded "questionable makeup" label. He's also just under six feet tall, which may have hurt his stock a bit.
