Mets signed RHP Craig Hansen to a minor league contract.
The deal runs through 2013. Hansen, 28, was considered the Red Sox' closer of the future at one time, but he just never put it together and has been plagued by a rare nerve issue in his neck the last few years. Evidently the Mets are convinced the former first-round pick is healthy now. Tue, Jul 24, 2012 07:12:00 PM

Pirates released RHP Craig Hansen.

Hansen was considered a future closer when he was drafted by the Red Sox back in 2006, but things just haven't gone according to plan. Now 27 years old, he has been limited to just 17 appearances over the past two seasons due to a rare nerve issue in his neck.

Craig Hansen (neck) received good news in a check-up last week.

Hansen, out since April with a nerve issue that caused spasms in his neck, finally got a positive report. The problematic nerve has moved closer to the muscle in his neck that needs to be strengthened. Although Hansen is doubtful to be ready for spring training, he could return at some point next season.

Craig Hansen said Thursday that his nerve issue "is progressing," but the Pirates still haven't established a timetable for his return.

Hansen was diagnosed with Personage-Turner Syndrome, a nerve issue, in early August. He's not likely to return this season and, if that's the case, will finish the year with a 5.68 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 6 1/3 innings.

Craig Hansen, on the disabled list since April with a nerve issue, has been diagnosed with Personage-Turner Syndrome.

The nerve ailment has deteriorated and shut down muscles in Hansen's upper back, shoulder and upper arm. The only prescription he's been given is rest. There isn't a word right now," said the right-hander. "I just come back every month for a retesting to see where the nerve is and, basically, we go from there." A return to the bullpen this season appears doubtful.

Hansen is out indefinitely with a nerve issue in his neck, and the Pirates needed the roster spot for Andrew McCutchen.

More tests on Craig Hansen's stiff neck Monday confirmed that he's dealing with a nerve issue.

Hansen will fly to Bradenton, Florida on Tuesday to begin rehab. It's hard to say how long he'll be out, but it definitely doesn't sound good. The nerve issue is preventing him from controlling his trapezoid muscle. We'll keep you updated.

Reliever Craig Hansen (neck) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Friday.

He reported the results to be "Pretty good. It went well. Working on mechanics and following through, just to take some ache off." He's expected to throw a few more side sessions before a trip to extended spring training and eventually a rehab assignment.

Craig Hansen is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday.

It'll be his first. Hansen was placed on the disabled list April 25 with neck spasms and is still about two weeks from returning to the Pirates' bullpen.

Craig Hansen was perfect for an inning, striking out two, Wednesday against the Phillies.

Since he's out of options, Hansen is practically guaranteed a spot in Pittsburgh's pen. Spring training will determine if he'll actually have a significant role or if he'll be a mop-up man at the beginning of the season.

After entering a one-run game in the eighth, Craig Hansen gave up three runs in one-third of an inning to take a blown save and a loss Thursday against the Reds.

Incredible. Not that he struggled, but that manager John Russell actually put him into the game at that point. Russell was dealing with a short-handed pen, as Matt Capps, Denny Bautista and John Grabow had all worked on back-to-back days. Still, Hansen's spectacularly poor results of late should have made T.J. Beam the choice to start the eighth. Hansen has a 10.45 ERA and a 3/14 K/BB ratio in 10 1/3 innings for his new team.

Pirates recalled RHP Craig Hansen from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Hansen allowed nine earned runs and walked 12 in 10 innings for Pittsburgh before being sent down last week. He'll have to earn it if he wants to resume working in close games.
