Dallas Braden has elected to become a free agent.
Braden was outrighted off the A's 40-man roster on Tuesday and refused an assignment to Triple-A Sacramento. The 29-year-old lefty has made only three starts since the opening of the 2011 season due to shoulder issues. He may have to settle for a minor league deal this winter. Oakland also cut ties on Tuesday evening with right-handed reliever Joey Devine. Tue, Oct 30, 2012 04:54:00 PM

Dallas Braden is expected to be non-tendered this offseason.

Braden underwent surgery in late August to repair a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder and is hoping to be 100 percent healthy by the All-Star break. Coming off a significant injury, he figures to be re-signed on a minor league contract.

Dallas Braden (shoulder) is hoping to be 100 percent healthy by the All-Star break next season.

Braden underwent surgery in late August to repair a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder -- an injury he suffered while rehabbing from a capsule procedure. The left-hander seems likely to be non-tendered by the A's this winter. He told reporters on Sunday evening that he would be open to returning on a minor league contract.

Dallas Braden underwent surgery last week to repair a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder.

Braden's rotator cuff was undamaged when he had capsule surgery last year, so the assumption is that the lefty hurt himself while rehabbing. It's pretty much the worst-case scenario, as Braden could now possibly miss all of next season, and it's certainly conceivable that he'll never be the same pitcher.

Dallas Braden will undergo a second surgery on his left shoulder.

Tough news for Braden, who hasn't pitched at all this season following surgery to repair a torn capsule muscle last May. Athletics manager Bob Melvin described the second procedure as "exploratory," so it's not exactly clear what damage was found in the shoulder. However, one thing we can say with absolute certainty is that he will not pitch in 2012.

Dallas Braden (shoulder, groin) has yet to resume baseball activities, and remains without a timetable.

Braden hasn't pitched since suffering a setback last month, with manager Bob Melvin saying only that he "remains bothered" by the injury. Given how little progress he's made, there's no guarantee Braden will return this season. His next step will involve being cleared to restart a throwing program.

Dallas Braden (shoulder) had a bullpen session cut short Friday due to a left groin strain.

The A's haven't commented on how far this might set Braden back, but Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says it "could jeopardize" the lefty's potential return in September. The good news is that Braden's surgically-repaired shoulder is fine, and with the A's in playoff contention, the odds that he would make any meaningful starts down the stretch probably were long, anyway.

Dallas Braden (shoulder) threw a successful 20-pitch live batting practice session Friday in Arizona.

Braden's next step will involve being cleared for a rehab assignment. It sounds like his latest recovery is going as planned, and, barring a setback, he should be an option for the starting rotation in early September.

Dallas Braden (shoulder) was scheduled to throw to hitters Friday in Arizona.

Assuming all goes well, it shouldn't be much longer before he goes out on a minor league rehab assignment. The southpaw is a possibility to join the A's in September. Braden has been out all season while rehabbing from shoulder capsule surgery.

Dallas Braden (shoulder) tossed a successful 33-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday afternoon.

Braden will now head down to the A's spring training complex in Arizona to begin facing live hitters. He could be an option for the Oakland rotation in early September.

Dallas Braden (shoulder) had another successful bullpen session Saturday.

Braden has altered his delivery a bit in order to relieve stress on his surgically-repaired left shoulder. The A's have the luxury of taking it slowly with Braden given how well their rotation has pitched. He probably won't be a candidate to start for them until September.

Dallas Braden (shoulder) "bounced off the mound" following a successful 40-pitch bullpen session Tuesday.

It's clear Braden is excited with how his rehab is progressing. A rehab assignment should come before long, and a return sometime in August seems possible at this time.

Dallas Braden (shoulder) threw a successful 40-pitch bullpen session on Friday evening.

He noted no pain in his shoulder afterwards, and will repeat the exercise again on Tuesday. If all goes well, Braden could soon progress to a minor league rehab assignment. The lefty anticipates joining the A's at some point before the end of August.

Dallas Braden (shoulder) felt good Tuesday, a day after his first bullpen session since he had a setback during spring training.

Braden said he felt no different than he would after he played catch. The lefty is still a long ways away, but he's feeling optimistic about his progress and hopes to make an impact sometime during the second half.

Dallas Braden (shoulder) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Monday.

It's the first time he's thrown from a mound since he had a setback during spring training. A's manager Bob Melvin said Braden, who threw all fastballs, looked "real good," and he's still expecting the lefty to contribute later this season. He won't be counted on until sometime in August, at the earliest.
