Astros activated OF Justin Maxwell from the 15-day disabled list.
Maxwell, out since April 23 with a fractured hand, hit .128 (5-for-39) with one home run and five RBI in 11 rehab games between Double- and Triple-A. The 29-year-old is expected to return as a member of the starting lineup, but Astros manager Bo Porter has indicated that he may see playing time in a corner outfield spot, as he likes what Brandon Barnes brings defensively in center field. Astros manager Bo Porter suggested Friday that Justin Maxwell (hand) may not be the starting center fielder when he returns from the disabled list.

Maxwell is still locked into a starting job, but could be used in one of the corner outfield spots. "I'm going to say that he will start. I'm not going to say it will be at center field," Porter said. "Brandon Barnes has done a great job there. He will warrant some continued playing time. That's why we've had Maxwell play some places beside center field [during his rehab assignment]."

Astros manager Bo Porter said Tuesday that Justin Maxwell's struggles during his rehab assignment will not have an impact on his starting job.

Maxwell, who is currently working his way back from a fractured hand, is 1-for-21 with eight strikeouts through six games with Double-A Corpus Christi. "When you start talking injury-wise, you just want to make sure that physically, the guy is able to perform and he's not having any setbacks from a health standpoint," said Porter. "I'm not worried about any other aspects." It's not clear when Maxwell will be activated from the disabled list, but he'll be the Astros' starting center fielder upon his return.

Making matters worse, Maxwell was scratched from Monday's lineup due to illness and has been dealing with food poisoning over the past few days. The 29-year-old was originally expected to play his final rehab game on Tuesday, but the Astros figure to give him a little more time to get well and shake the rust. He has been sidelined since late April with a fractured left hand.

Astros manager Bo Porter said Justin Maxwell (hand) will be his starting center fielder when he returns from the disabled list.

Brandon Barnes has been pretty productive, but it's not a surprise that the 'Stros will go back to Maxwell, who could be activated as soon as next week. J.D. Martinez will be the club's left fielder, while Barnes and Jimmy Paredes will fight for playing time in right.

Justin Maxwell (hand) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Corpus Christi.

Maxwell fractured his left hand when he was hit by a pitch on April 24, but he's ready to return to game action. He figures to rejoin the Astros' lineup by the middle of the month.

Justin Maxwell will undergo an X-ray mid-week to determine how much his fractured left hand has healed.

If the healing is sufficient, Maxwell could begin a rehab assignment in mid-May, putting him on pace to return at the beginning of his protected 4-6 week timetable. "I can’t change what happened. The only way it’s going to get better is through healing. … The more positive you are in your attitude, the quicker it’s going to heal," said Maxwell. "I’m just looking forward to Tuesday or Wednesday and seeing what it’s looking like and hopefully everything’s going well."
