Nationals released RHP Matt Torra.

Torra had a 5.53 ERA in 27 2/3 innings this season at Triple-A Syracuse. The 28-year-old right-hander will presumably try to latch on with a new organization.

Rays acquired RHP Matt Torra from the Diamondbacks for cash considerations.

The Rays have assigned him to Triple-A Durham. Torra, 27, has 4.52 ERA over parts of seven seasons in the minor leagues. The 6-foot-3 right-hander had a 6.07 ERA and 41/20 K/BB ratio over his first 15 starts with Triple-A Reno this season. He's unlikely to be anything more than organizational depth at this point.

2005 supplemental first-round pick Matt Torra pitched a three-hit shutout Sunday for Double-A Mobile.

Torra's stuff never came all of the way back following 2005 shoulder surgery, so he's a fringe prospect these days. He's 3-5 with a 4.04 ERA, 68 H and 35/15 K/BB in 64 2/3 innings for Mobile.

2005 first-round pick Matt Torra gave up six runs -- five earned -- in 3 2/3 innings Saturday for Single-A Visalia, pushing his ERA up to 11.81.

Torra had surgery the September after he was drafted to repair a torn labrum and hasn't been able to make a strong comeback. He's given up 21 earned runs and 32 hits in 16 innings so far this year.

2005 first-round pick Matt Torra will begin this season at extended spring training as he recovers from labrum surgery that took place last September.

Torra is still a month or two away from getting back on a mound. "Just to get him (pitching in games) this summer would be a success in my books," farm director A.J. Hinch said. "It's not something you want to rush."

Diamondbacks selected University of Massachusetts RHP Matt Torra with the 31st pick in the draft.

The Diamondbacks also added big names RHP Jason Neighborgall and RHP Micah Owings in the third round. Torra, a potential third starter, was expected to go in the first round after rising throughout the summer. Neighborgall, who turned down a big offer from Boston out of high school, battled major control problems throughout his college career. He still has a great arm, but he's not going to get the deal he would have three years ago. Owings has been an outstanding first baseman and pitcher for Tulane, but major league clubs didn't think he projected as a star in either role.
