Astros designated OF Fernando Martinez for assignment.

The former top prospect got a late start to the season due to an oblique strain, and he batted only .182/.229/.273 in 11 games after returning. Martinez is still just 24, so someone might take a chance on him on waivers, but it's pretty clear at this point that he'll never come close to living up to his previous hype.
May 6 - 6:24 PM

Astros activated OF Fernando Martinez from the 15-day disabled list.

Martinez has been out since spring training because of an oblique strain. The 24-year-old should get regular playing time in the Houston outfield while J.D. Martinez recovers from a sprained right knee.
Apr 20 - 4:54 PM

Fernando Martinez (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday.

Martinez has been dealing with an oblique strain since late in spring training. The 24-year-old should be activated before the end of the month as long as he can avoid a setback.
Apr 14 - 1:39 PM

Fernandez Martinez (oblique) is scheduled to hit in the cage on Friday.

Martinez was forced to begin the season on the disabled list with a strained oblique, but he is beginning to make progress. The 24-year-old should serve as a part-time outfielder upon his return.
Apr 5 - 5:07 PM

Astros placed OF Fernando Martinez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 27, with a strained oblique.

It's the same injury that he's dealt with for over a week. Now that he's been officially ruled out for the start of the season, it's possible the Astros could target Casper Wells or Julio Borbon should they become available. J.D. Martinez has also been recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a corresponding move.
Mar 30 - 1:48 PM

Fernando Martinez (back) could begin the season on the 15-day disabled list.

Martinez was scratched from Thursday's lineup due to lower back tightness and is scheduled to see a doctor in Houston on Friday. "I think it’s the [left] oblique right now," said Martinez. "I feel a little more pain right now than I did before. Hopefully a couple of days off and I’ll be back." If a stint on the disabled list is required, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Astros land an outfielder off waivers in the coming days.

Mar 28 - 4:25 PM

Fernando Martinez was scratched from the Astros' spring lineup on Thursday due to lower back discomfort.

Martinez has been dealing with lower back discomfort for over a week, and there's now a decent chance that he won't be ready for the Astros' Opening Night game on March 31 against the Rangers. He is expected to serve as a utility outfielder this season for Houston.
Mar 28 - 12:04 PM

Fernando Martinez has made the Astros' 25-man roster.

Martinez has been out of action for over a week with a back injury, but the 'Stros expect him to be fine by Opening Day. He will serve as a backup outfielder.
Mar 25 - 2:52 PM

Fernando Martinez (back) is expected to return to the lineup Sunday.

Martinez, who has been out of action nearly a week, participated in batting practice Thursday and said his back feels "much better." He's competing for an Opening Day roster spot.
Mar 22 - 10:36 AM

Fernando Martinez (back) is expected to return to game action soon.

Martinez hasn't played since leaving Saturday's game with back tightness. It doesn't sound like a major concern, but he's running out of time to prove that he's worthy of a roster spot.
Mar 21 - 4:38 PM

Fernando Martinez is not in Sunday's lineup due to back tightness.

Martinez exited Saturday's contest with the ailment. He should be fine in a few days.
Mar 17 - 8:58 AM

Fernando Martinez doubled and singled in his two at-bats against the Nationals on Thursday.

Martinez is 6-for-16 with a homer, two doubles and four RBI this spring. Since he's out of options, he's a very good bet to make the Astros if healthy. Still, there might be less playing time available for him now that Chris Carter is penciled in as the left fielder.
Mar 7 - 4:06 PM

Fernando Martinez homered off Matt Harvey as the Astros and Mets played to a 7-7 tie on Sunday.

Martinez skipped the WBC to enhance his chances of making the Astros. That he's out of options will definitely give him an edge if he puts together a respectable exhibition season.
Feb 24 - 5:16 PM

Fernando Martinez will not play for the Spain in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

The change of heart comes after Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said last month that Martinez's decision to play in the WBC could hurt his chances of making the Opening Day roster. "I just thought about and I figured it would be a lost couple of weeks and I want to make the team here," said Martinez. F-Mart batted .237/.300/.466 with six home runs, 14 RBI and a .766 OPS in 41 games with the Astros last season and will be in the mix for the starting right field job this spring.
