Twins minor league right-hander Deolis Guerra has been transferred to a hospital in Tampa for rib resection surgery.

The surgery date has yet to be announced. Guerra was recently diagnosed with a blood clot in his shoulder and is expected to miss approximately three months following surgery. Of course, right now his overall health is the most important thing.

Twins minor leaguer Deolis Guerra remains in intensive care in a Florida hospital because of a blood clot.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters Monday that the extended stay is for "precautionary" reasons. Guerra was found to have a blood clot in his right shoulder last week. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Deolis Guerra has been hospitalized with a blood clot in his shoulder that will require surgery.

The procedure is expected to keep him sidelined for the next three months. Guerra has already been removed from Venezuela's World Baseball Classic roster and is now no longer a candidate the Twins' Opening Day bullpen. The 23-year-old right-hander should be available to return around midseason.

Deolis Guerra could have a torn pectoral muscle.

Guerra has already been removed from Venezuela's World Baseball Classic roster and is headed to the Twins' spring training complex for further testing. He had been in line to compete for a spot in the Twins' Opening Day bullpen, but obviously that's out the window.

Deolis Guerra has been removed from Venezuela's World Baseball Classic roster due to a strained pectoral muscle.

It's not clear how long the hard-thrower will be out, but it will likely keep him from competing for a spot in the Twins' Opening Day bullpen. He's been replaced on Venezuela's roster by Mauricio Robles.

Deolis Guerra will pitch for Team Venezuela in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

The 23-year-old right-hander posted a 4.11 ERA and 71/22 K/BB ratio over 70 innings between two minor league levels in 2012. While he isn't on the 40-man roster, he's a candidate to earn a spot in the Twins bullpen.

Twins sent RHP Deolis Guerra outright to Triple-A Rochester.

He'll be invited to spring training. A hard-throwing right-hander, Guerra posted a 4.11 ERA while striking out 71 over 70 innings between Double- and Triple-A in his first full season as a reliever.

Twins recalled RHP Deolis Guerra from Triple-A Rochester.

The hard-throwing right-hander posted a 4.11 ERA while striking out 71 over 70 innings between Double- and Triple-A in his first full season as a reliever. He could break camp with the big club next spring.

1500 ESPN's Phil Mackey suggests Deolis Guerra is making a strong case to join the Twins bullpen.

Guerra will be out of minor league options after this season so the Twins may want to get him some experience without being forced to pass him through waivers. The 23-year-old was recently promoted to Triple-A Rochester, and could be on the fast track to the majors.

Twins optioned RHPs Deolis Guerra and Lester Oliveros, OF Darin Mastroianni and LHPs Scott Diamond and Tyler Robertson to Triple-A Rochester.

Guerra gave up five runs across three innings in three appearances this spring. The 22-year-old posted a 2.77 ERA and 65/13 K/BB ratio over 52 innings after being moved to the bullpen last year, so he could still be a useful piece down the line. Oliveros entered spring training with a legitimate chance to make the Opening Day roster, so it's a bit of a surprise to see him be sent down so soon. Look for the hard-throwing right-hander to pitch some innings out of the Twins' bullpen this season.

Twins optioned INF Estarlin De Los Santos and RHPs Deolis Guerra and Loek Van Mil to Double-A New Britain.

Guerra, who turns 21 in April, was a part of the Johan Santana trade, however he has managed a 5.16 ERA and 177/113 K/BB ratio in 279 innings since joining the Twins' organization. He'll try to do better than the 5.17 ERA he posted with New Britain last season, but it's getting hard to justify having him occupy a spot on the 40-man roster.

Deolis Guerra tossed a complete-game shutout for Single-A Fort Myers on Tuesday.

Guerra had a 6.63 ERA during June and he's barely striking out more batters than he's walking, but for one night anyway, it all came together for the 19-year-old. The performance lowered his ERA to 4.32.

Deolis Guerra moved to 6-1 at Single-A Fort Myers after allowing one run in six innings on Thursday.

Guerra has the pretty record, but he's sporting a 4.23 ERA and a 32/26 K/BB ratio in 55 1/3 innings. He pitched in the same league last year in the Mets' organization and had a 4.01 ERA and a 66/25 K/BB ratio in 89 2/3 innings, so it doesn't appear that he's progressing.

Right-hander Deolis Guerra was acquired by the Twins in the Johan Santana deal.

Guerra went 2-6 with a 4.01 ERA, 80 H and 66/25 K/BB in 89 2/3 innings as a rare 18-year-old in the Florida State League last season. That he had some shoulder soreness during the season is a definite cause for concern, but he offers an awful lot of upside. His velocity was up last year before his troubles and likely will continue to increase as he matures.
