Astros signed OF Nick Stavinoha to a minor league contract.

Stavinoha batted .270 with a decent .817 OPS in 133 games this season at Triple-A Memphis, but he's a poor outfielder and is unlikely to reach the majors in Houston.

Nick Stavinoha (knee) struck out as a pinch-hitter Saturday.

Of course he did. Stavinoha had two fairly heroic home runs this season, but he is not ready to play a major role on a big league club and shouldn't be on the Cardinals' Opening Day roster next season. The big 28-year-old has a .258/.288/.342 batting line and 28 strikeouts in 120 at-bats this year.

Nick Stavinoha (knee) grounded out in a pinch-hit appearance in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game.

Nick Stavinoha (knee) will be limited to pinch-hitting duties Saturday for the second straight day.

The outfielder was scratched from Friday's lineup with a stiff knee but was able to pinch-hit. He's considered day-to-day.

Nick Stavinoha was scratched Friday due to "knee issues."

The Cardinals are calling the issues "minor," meaning Stavinoha is probably just dealing with soreness. Allen Craig is starting in right field on Friday afternoon against Cubs left-hander Tom Gorzelanny.

Cardinals recalled OF Nick Stavinoha from Triple-A Memphis.

Stavinoha, a right-handed batter, will give the Cardinals another option against left-handed starters. The 28-year-old outfielder is batting .263/.300/.347 with two home runs and seven RBI in 95 at-bats with the Cardinals this season.

Cardinals optioned outfielder Nick Stavinoha to Triple-A Memphis.

He goes to make room for Pedro Feliz on the roster. Stavinoha received just two at-bats in his latest stint with the Cards. He'll rejoin the team when rosters expand.

Cardinals recalled OF Nick Stavinoha from Triple-A Memphis.

Stavinoha was just sent back to the minors last Tuesday. The 28-year-old outfielder is batting .258/.296/.344 with two homers and seven RBI in 93 at-bats with the Cards this season.

Cardinals optioned OF Nick Stavinoha to Triple-A Memphis.

Stavinoha was just activated from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday. The 28-year-old outfielder has a .258/.296/.344 batting line to go along with two homers and seven RBI in 93 at-bats with the big club this season.

Cardinals activated OF Nick Stavinoha from the 15-day disabled list.

Stavinoha has been out since before the All-Star break with a strained right shoulder. He batted .368 in a five-game rehab assignment at Triple-A Memphis, so it appears he's ready to resume his duties as a reserve outfielder/pinch hitter. He takes the roster spot of Ryan Ludwick, who was traded to San Diego.

Nick Stavinoha (shoulder) has begun a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis.

Stavinoha went 1-for-3 with an RBI double on Monday against rehabbing Rangers starter Rich Harden. The outfielder should be back to full health by the end of the week, if not sooner, but the Cards just activated Ryan Ludwick from the disabled list and Jon Jay is playing too well to be demoted. Stavinoha may be activated then immediately optioned back to Triple-A.

Cardinals placed OF Nick Stavinoha on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.

Stavinoha suffered the injury before the All-Star break and was not feeling well enough when he showed up to Busch Stadium on Thursday afternoon. He's hit .256/.295/.344 in 90 at-bats this year as a pinch-hitter and sometimes-fill-in for injured right fielder Ryan Ludwick.

Nick Stavinoha blasted a pinch-hit two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning Friday to lead the Cardinals over the Brewers 5-4.

Stavinoha doesn't exactly fit on the Cards' roster, considering they have a solid trio of outfielders and a few worthy backups in Joe Mather and Felipe Lopez, but you can't deny heroics. He was 5-for-15 as a pinch-hitter last year and seems to be embracing the role already in 2010.

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Nick Stavinoha has a fractured hand and is done for the season.

The Cardinals had planned on recalling Stavinoha to act as their third catcher for the stretch run, but the burly 27-year-old will focus on 2010 instead. He hit .230/.242/.379 in a handful of stints (87 at-bats) with the Cards this season.
