Berg was designated for assignment by the Cubs last week. The 27-year-old right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery last month and will miss the entire 2012 season.

Berg, 25, tossed two scoreless innings against the Phillies back on August 13. He was 6-2 with a 2.43 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 37 games with Triple-A Iowa. He should slide into a middle relief role in skipper Lou Pinella's pen.
