Pirates re-signed C Miguel Perez to a minor league contract.
The 31-year-old did not play during the 2014 season, serving as a player-coach in the Pirates organization at Low-A West Virginia. He's expected to function in a similar role someplace in the Pirates organization in 2015. Sat, Nov 22, 2014 10:14:00 AM

Pirates re-signed C Miguel Perez to a minor league contract.

Perez was limited to four games with the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate in 2012 and has a career .268/.322/.341 batting line in parts of 11 seasons in the minors. He's merely organizational depth.

Nationals acquired C Miguel Perez from the Pirates.

The Nats dealt Perez to the Bucs back in June, but he was returned on Tuesday in a minor swap and will report to Double-A Harrisburg. Perez, 27, is batting .269/.321/.346 in 28 plate appearances this year down on the farm.

Pirates acquired C Miguel Perez from the Nationals for a player to be named player or cash considerations.

Perez, 27, hasn't appeared in the majors since 2005 as a member of the Reds. He has a .270/.323/.343 batting line over parts of 10 seasons in the minor leagues. The Pirates are short on help behind the plate right now, so he will presumably serve as depth at the Double-A or Triple-A level.

Reds prospect Miguel Perez is expected to miss half the season after surgery to remove his first rib to relieve pressure on his subclavian artery.

Perez was non-tendered by the Reds in December and then re-signed to a minor league contract. The 23-year-old is a future backup at best.

Reds re-signed catcher Miguel Perez to a minor league contract.

The 23-year-old Perez was non-tendered prior to Tuesday night's deadline. He'll spend next year at Double-A Chattanooga or Triple-A Louisville.

Reds non-tendered catcher Miguel Perez.

Perez was added to the 40-man roster too early a couple of years ago, and he never justified the spot while compiling some ugly numbers in the minors. He's just 23 and he's a fine defender, but he's a future backup at best and he has a long way to go.

Reds recalled catcher Miguel Perez from Triple-A Louisville.

Perez, who turns 22 this month, hit .268/.305/.347 in 291 AB for Single-A Sarasota and .208/.275/.292 in 72 AB for Louisville. The Reds were already using a 40-man roster spot on him, so there's no harm in calling him now. While he might eventually have a career as a defensive-minded backup, he's a couple of years away.
