Nick Masset (shoulder) admits that he's had some "small setbacks" in his recovery from shoulder surgery and is "a long ways away" from throwing off a mound.

Masset underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in September and was supposed to be ready to go for spring training, but that's obviously not the case. "In the beginning, it doesn’t always go as smooth as silk," he said. "I’ve had some small setbacks." Masset is currently throwing from 90 feet three days a week and will have to progress to throwing every day before he'll be allowed to throw from the bump.

Nick Masset (shoulder) said Friday that he's about a month away from beginning a throwing program.

The right-hander hopes to be throwing off a mound by the beginning of spring training. Masset missed all of 2012 with a shoulder issue that eventually required arthroscopic surgery. He'll be a big boost to the Reds' bullpen in 2013 if he can show he's healthy, as he pitched quite well for them from 2009-11.

Masset didn't throw a pitch in the majors this season and recently shut things down after encountering multiple setbacks. The 30-year-old right-hander is expected to be ready for spring training and is owed $3.1 million in 2013.

Masset recently had a setback that required an MRI, and is awaiting the results. It's not clear whether this changes his original timetable, but his return to the team shouldn't be considered imminent. The Reds were hoping to activate Masset when rosters expand in September.

Nick Masset (shoulder) will resume his rehab assignment Tuesday after experiencing stiffness following his last appearance.

"He had a little bit of stiffness after he threw," Reds pitching coach Bryan Price said. "And because of where we are, we're treating this as his own personal spring training. He could have pitched yesterday, and we decided to push him back. It's nothing significant." Masset could face a final hurdle by appearing in back-to-back games as soon as later this week. He's expected to be activated when rosters expand.

Masset has looked healthy in recent rehab appearances, but the Reds want to give him a little more time to rebuild the strength of his right shoulder. The 30-year-old setup man has been on the disabled list all season.

Masset, who has been out all season due to shoulder problems, struck out five over two scoreless innings with the Reds' Arizona League affiliate. "I feel great," said Masset. "I feel like I turned the corner." Barring any setbacks, the 30-year-old right-hander should join the Reds' bullpen at some point this month.

Nick Masset (shoulder) threw 25 pitches in a live batting practice session Tuesday.

It was his second live BP session. "He felt good," Reds pitching coach Bryan Price said. "Depending on how he responds, he’ll either throw in a simulated game or an (Arizona League) game." Masset could be back sometime in August if he keeps progressing.

Good news. Assuming everything goes off without a hitch, Masset will pitch in an Arizona League game on Tuesday or Wednesday. The 29-year-old right-hander has been out all season with shoulder problems, so he'll likely require a lengthy rehab stint.
