Padres signed C Erik Kratz to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
It's not a great landing spot, as the Padres already have Derek Norris, Austin Hedges and Christian Bethancourt on the roster (although they seem likely to trade one of the first two players). Kratz hit just .192/.214/.269 in 16 games in the majors in 2015 and will be around for depth. Fri, Dec 11, 2015 01:33:00 PM

Erik Kratz has elected free agency.

The veteran backstop traveled through four organizations during the 2015 season, spending time with the Royals, Red Sox, Mariners and Phillies. He appeared in just 16 games at the big league level, slashing .192/.214/.269 with three RBI. He'll look to score a minor league deal this winter with an opportunity to compete for a backup catcher job.

Phillies sent C Erik Kratz outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Kratz had himself quite a ride this season. He started the year with the Royals, was subsequently designated for assignment in June before being picked up by the Red Sox, who then designated him for assignment, at which point he was picked up by the Mariners in early July, released in mid-July and signed by the Phillies on July 17. Phew. Across all of that action, he accrued five hits in 26 at-bats. He slashed .256/.351/.471 in the minors over 172 at-bats, which isn't too shabby considering his decidedly jumbled season.

Phillies purchased the contract of C Erik Kratz from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Kratz, who previously played with the Phillies from 2011-2013, returned to the organization in July on a minor league deal. He'll function as a third catcher down the stretch.

Mariners released C Erik Kratz.

Kratz was just signed a couple weeks ago and batted .205/.279/.308 over 10 games. The M's are reportedly close to trading for a catcher, so there appears to no longer be room for Kratz.

Mariners signed C Erik Kratz to a minor league contract.

The veteran backstop elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox earlier in the week. While he'll begin at Triple-A Tacoma, he should work his way up to the big league club in relatively short order.

Robert Murray of BaseballEssential.com reports that the Braves and Mariners are the "frontrunners" to sign Erik Kratz.

Kratz elected free agency on Monday after clearing waivers. His defense isn't great, but the 35-year-old has some pop and wouldn't be a bad backup catcher for someone.

Erik Kratz has elected to become a free agent.

He went unclaimed on waivers after the Red Sox designated him for assignment last week. Jon Morosi of Fox Sports suggests the Mariners could be interested. The 35-year-old has appeared in four major league games this season, all with Kansas City.

Red Sox sent C Erik Kratz outright to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The 35-year-old was designated for assignment earlier in the week by the Red Sox, just a few days after being claimed off waivers from the Royals. He'll continue to provide organizational catching depth for the Red Sox.

Red Sox claimed C Erik Kratz off waivers from the Royals.

Kratz isn't a very good defensive catcher but does offer nice pop as a backup. His stay in Boston could be brief with Ryan Hanigan (hand) due back from the disabled list soon.

Royals activated C Erik Kratz from the 15-day disabled list; designated him for assignment.

Kratz is recovered from his recent spell of plantar fasciitis, but the Royals will stick with Drew Butera as the backup to starting catcher Salvador Perez. Kratz, 34, is a .217/.270/.400 career hitter in 180 major league games. He will probably pass through waivers.

Erik Kratz (foot) could begin a rehab assignment next week.

Kratz, who is nursing plantar fasciitis in his foot, has resumed baseball activities. "It just takes time to get that [plantar fasciitis] out of there," Royals trainer Nick Kenney said. Kratz could return before the end of the month.

Royals placed C Erik Kratz on the 15-day disabled list with a foot injury.

It's not clear how long Kratz will be sidelined. He has logged just five plate appearances (and zero hits) this season as the backup to catcher Salvador Perez.
