Red Sox sent C Erik Kratz outright to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The 35-year-old was designated for assignment earlier in the week by the Red Sox, just a few days after being claimed off waivers from the Royals. He'll continue to provide organizational catching depth for the Red Sox.

Kratz is recovered from his recent spell of plantar fasciitis, but the Royals will stick with Drew Butera as the backup to starting catcher Salvador Perez. Kratz, 34, is a .217/.270/.400 career hitter in 180 major league games. He will probably pass through waivers.

Kratz, who is nursing plantar fasciitis in his foot, has resumed baseball activities. "It just takes time to get that [plantar fasciitis] out of there," Royals trainer Nick Kenney said. Kratz could return before the end of the month.

Erik Kratz entered the game as a pinch-hitter and hit two solo home runs in his only two plate appearances in Monday's win against the Twins.

The home runs were Kratz's first two as a Royal after joining the team in a July 28 trade with the Blue Jays. Kratz's first home run extended the Royals' lead to 4-0 in the seventh, and his second came in the ninth inning to make it a 6-1 game. Including his time with the Jays, Kratz has five home runs, 12 RBI, and a .234/.258/.426 slash line in 97 plate appearances.
