Red Sox designated INF Ryan Roberts for assignment.

That didn't take long. Roberts was brought in on a one-year deal a week and a half ago but has been given the boot after picked up just two singles in 19 at-bats. Jonathan Herrera and Brock Holt will handle third base until Will Middlebrooks (calf) returns.

Ryan Roberts went 0-for-2 with two walks in his Red Sox debut in Tuesday's loss to the Rangers.

The Red Sox brought Roberts on board on Monday to fill in for the injured Will Middlebrooks. Roberts handles the strike zone well, but doesn't hit for average and doesn't hit for enough power to make up for it. Leagues with on-base percentage are obviously a much better fit for Roberts, but he does swipe the occasional base, making him worth a consideration in deeper leagues. He may only have a few weeks' worth of value, however, assuming Middlebrooks returns by the end of April or early May.

Ryan Roberts will make his Red Sox debut Tuesday against the Rangers.

Roberts signed a one-year deal with Boston on Monday and will split playing time with Jonathan Herrera at third base while Will Middlebrooks (calf) is sidelined. He's not an option outside of AL-only fantasy leagues.

Red Sox signed INF Ryan Roberts to a one-year contract.

Roberts gives Boston depth at third base while Will Middlebrooks nurses a calf strain. Roberts was released by the Cubs at the end of spring training and is not a good fantasy bet, even if he works his way into regular playing time. The 33-year-old is a .245/.321/.392 career hitter in 510 major league games.

Cubs released INF Ryan Roberts.

Roberts did not make the Cubs' Opening Day roster, so he used the out clause in his minor league contract on Thursday. He'll try to sign quickly with a new team.
Mar 27 - 2:41 PM

Cubs signed INF Ryan Roberts to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

It's a good landing spot for him, as the Cubs don't really have much at second or third base. Roberts batted just .247/.295/.377 with five homers and 17 RBI in 162 at-bats for the Rays in 2013, but he's versatile and won't have trouble cracking the Opening Day roster.

Ryan Roberts has elected free agency.

The 33-year-old utility player had a very disappointing 2013 season, slashing .247/.295/.377 with five homers and 17 RBI in just 162 at-bats. With his versatility, he shouldn't have a problem finding a team willing to let him compete for a reserve role, though his usefulness in mixed leagues is minimal.

Rays sent INF Ryan Roberts outright to Triple-A Durham.

Roberts was designated for assignment by the Rays last week after batting just .247 with a .295 OPS in 174 plate appearances. He passed through waivers unclaimed and will now serve as organizational depth for Tampa Bay.

Rays designated INF Ryan Roberts for assignment.

Roberts has hit just .247/.295/.377 in 174 plate appearances this season for Tampa Bay, but the 32-year-old infielder still has a bit of power left in his bat and could draw some interest on waivers.

Rays optioned INF Ryan Roberts to Triple-A Durham.

The move clears a spot for David Price's return from the disabled list. Roberts went 3-for-5 with a pair of homers on Monday, so the Rays sending him down is a sign that Evan Longoria (foot) is close to returning to the lineup.

Ryan Roberts went 3-for-5 and hit his fourth and fifth homers Monday in the rout of the Astros.

Roberts was making his first start since being called up Saturday as a result of Evan Longoria's injury. The Rays will play him against lefties for however long they can afford to use a roster spot on him, but he doesn't figure to see action against righties. The second homer tonight, off reliever Hector Ambriz, was the first of his five homers this year to come off a righty.
