Astros optioned RHP Jack Cassel to Triple-A Round Rock.

The Astros will have Wandy Rodriguez back next time they need a fifth starter, making Cassel expendable. Ty Wigginton will be activated Friday to take the open roster spot. Cassel went 1-0 with a 5.59 ERA in his two starts.

Jack Cassel picked up a win in his Astros debut by allowing three runs in five innings Thursday against the Reds.

Cassel helped his cause with an RBI single before leaving after just 68 pitches. He struck out one and walked none. Cassel is likely to make one more start before Wandy Rodriguez comes off the disabled list.

Jack Cassel pitched six innings of one-hit ball for Triple-A Round Rock on Friday.

Maybe it's too early to send Roy Oswalt to the pen, but Cassel will likely be the first starter called up by the Astros this season. He's not much of a sleeper for fantasy purposes.

Astros optioned RHP Jack Cassel to Triple-A Round Rock; reassigned RHP Runevlys Hernandez to minor league camp.

Jack Cassel was removed after throwing two scoreless innings Thursday versus the Nationals.

The short outing suggests that he remains a long shot for a rotation spot. He's given up 10 runs -- seven earned -- in 13 innings this spring.

Jack Cassel was ineffective over four innings against the Indians on Saturday, allowing four runs and six hits.

At least he was better than Runelvys Hernandez, who allowed six runs in three innings in relief. The two are among the long shots to claim a spot in Houston's rotation. Hernandez never should have had a realistic shot, but Cassel was at least in the mix for a job as a middle reliever. His ERA is up to 5.73 now.

Jack Cassel yielded two runs -- one earned -- over three innings in his start against the Mets on Sunday.

Cassel is one of several pitchers technically in the mix for the fifth spot in Houston's rotation, though it's Shawn Chacon's spot to lose. His best hope of making the team is as a middle reliever, and he has a 3.86 ERA in seven innings so far.

Astros signed RHP Jack Cassel, who had been with the Padres, to a one-year contract.

It's surprising to see Cassel get a major league deal, but the Astros had plenty of spots available after all of their recent moves. The 28-year-old Cassel had a 3.97 ERA in four starts and two relief appearances for the Padres last season. He might get a chance to claim a spot in middle relief, but he's not much more than another Dave Borkowski.

Jack Cassel scattered eight hits over six innings and combined with three relievers on a shutout of the Pirates on Monday.

Doug Brocail, Heath Bell and Trevor Hoffman finished the 3-0 game. It's the Padres' 20th shutout. Boston has the next most with 13. The 27-year-old Cassel was making just his second start and fourth major league appearance. He might get another turn next week, but the Padres could also go with Brett Tomko, who impressed in his spot start last week.
