Don Kelly singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 14th as the Tigers beat the Astros 7-3 on Thursday.
Kelly, who had entered the game as a pinch-runner for Victor Martinez, got to hit with the bases loaded in the 14th after both Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder were intentionally walked to get to him. His grounder, which came on Dallas Keuchel's 78th pitch in relief, went through the right side of the infield, giving him his first RBI of the year. Tigers purchased the contract of OF Don Kelly from Triple-A Toledo.

Kelly will take the Opening Day roster spot of Quintin Berry, who was optioned to the minors earlier this week. The 32-year-old batted just .186/.276/.248 with one home run and a .523 OPS in 127 plate appearances in 2012, but will open the season in a bench role with the Tigers.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland indicated Wednesday that Don Kelly will make the Opening Day roster.

The decision became obvious after Quintin Berry was optioned to the minors Wednesday. The 33-year-old has enjoyed a really solid spring, but with a .232/.283/.344 batting line in the majors, it's amazing how he continues to get chances.

Don Kelly went 4-for-4 with a homer and two doubles against the Braves on Tuesday.

The Tigers should really know better by now; Kelly isn't worth the roster spot no matter how well he plays in spring training. And in their defense, it doesn't sound like they're going to carry him. An NL team might take him on for his versatility, even though he's not as capable of playing the infield as he once was.

Don Kelly (wrist) is listed on the travel squad for Thursday's game against the Braves.

Kelly hasn't played since injuring his left wrist on a slide last Saturday. He had the wrist taped up before batting practice Wednesday, but it sounds like he's ready to return to action. Kelly is competing for a bench job this spring.

Tigers signed INF/OF Don Kelly to a minor league contract with a spring training invite.

Kelly became a free agent in October after he was outrighted off the Tigers' 40-man roster and refused a minor league assignment, but he has returned to the organization. The 32-year-old batted just .186/.276/.248 with one home run and a .523 OPS in 127 plate appearances last season. According to Jason Beck of MLB.com, Kelly can opt out of his contract with the Tigers if he doesn't make the team out spring training.

It was his first appearance in a game since suffering a knee contusion last Thursday. He should be fine moving forward.

Kelly suffered the injury while making a catch along the right field foul line in Thursday's game against the Cardinals. He's being called "day-to-day," and seems likely to avoid a stint on the 15-day disabled list.

Don Kelly drove in all three runs for the Tigers as they fell to the Rangers on Thursday.

Kelly made a rare start in left field filling in for Andy Dirks, and responded with a 2-for-4 effort and his first three RBI of the season. He's not a fantasy play, even in the deepest of leagues, but he still delivered a solid effort in this game.
