Olson was sent packing to make room for lefty Johan Santana, who is returning to the active roster Saturday. Olson struggled in his one appearance with the Mets, allowing four runs on three hits in just 1/3 of an inning.

Mets purchased the contract of LHP Garrett Olson from Triple-A Buffalo.

Olson, formerly of the Orioles, Mariners and Pirates, posted a 4.56 ERA and 94/51 K/BB ratio over 108 2/3 innings this season in Triple-A. He'll function as a second left-hander out of the bullpen and can be ignored in fantasy leagues.

The Mets will purchase the contract of left-hander Garrett Olson from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.

He'll give the Mets a second lefty out of the bullpen alongside rookie Josh Edgin. Olson, 28, has a 4.56 ERA and 94/51 K/BB ratio over 108 2/3 innings this season in Triple-A. He appeared in four games with the Pirates last season and holds an ugly 6.14 ERA in the big leagues. No word yet on the corresponding roster move.

Mets reassigned LHP Garrett Olson to minor league camp.

Olson allowed just four hits and two earned runs in 7 1/3 innings this spring but wasn't able to secure a lefty specialist gig in the Mets' Opening Day bullpen. He'll function as organizational relief depth.

Garrett Olson said Monday morning that the hand bruise he suffered Sunday was "minimal."

In other words, there's nothing to worry about. Olson seems likely to make the Mets' Opening Day roster as a left-handed relief specialist, edging out Josh Edgin.

Garrett Olson was struck in the left hand by a comebacker during a Double-A game Sunday.

X-rays were negative and he was diagnosed with a hand contusion. Adam Rubin of ESPN New York wrote: "Josh Edgin default Opening Day lefty specialist?" If Olson and Tim Byrdak (knee), are not healthy enough to begin the regular season, he may be.

Mets manager Terry Collins suggested that Garrett Olson could replace Tim Byrdak (knee), if Byrdak is not healthy enough to begin the regular season.

Olson and prospect Josh Edgin are believed to be on Collins' list of alternatives if the Byrdak injury becomes an issue. Likewise, Chuck James, Daniel Herrera and Robert Carson will all compete for spots in the Mets' bullpen.

Mets signed LHP Garrett Olson to a minor league contract.

Olson has been a complete bust in the majors, going 14-22 with a 6.14 ERA in 103 appearances -- 44 starts -- with the Orioles, Mariners and Pirates. He's likely to operate as a long reliever in the minor leagues.

Garrett Olson has been placed on the minor league disabled list with an oblique strain.

Olson will likely be sidelined for the next three weeks. He was outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis in mid-April despite allowing only one earned run and two hits across 4 1/3 innings with the big league Pirates.

Pirates sent LHP Garrett Olson outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Olson was designated for assignment last week by the Bucs and cleared waivers pretty easily. He's likely to operate as a long reliever down in the minor leagues.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Garrett Olson was designated for assignment because he wasn't stretched out enough to handle a long relief role.

Daniel McCutchen was, so he got to stick around even though he has options remaining. With Jeff Karstens having to enter the rotation, the Bucs needed someone in the bullpen with the ability to eat up some innings.
