Yankees designated RHP Kevin Whelan for assignment.

He was cleared to make room for the newly-signed Hiroki Kuroda on the 40-man roster. Whelan made two appearances with the Yankees last season, but spent the majority of the year with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting a 54/14 K/BB ratio over 52 1/3 innings. The 28-year-old could draw some interest on waivers.

Yankees optioned RHP Kevin Whelan to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Whelan spent a little under a week with the big league Yanks, allowing one earned run in two relief appearances. He should be back up later this season.

Yankees purchased the contract of RHP Kevin Whelan from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Whelan has been dynamite out of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's bullpen this season, posting a 1.67 ERA and 30/6 K/BB ratio over 27 innings. He'll try to help soften the blow of losing Joba Chamberlain to an elbow injury.

Kevin Whelan pitched two scoreless innings Thursday to finish the AFL season with a 2.08 ERA in 17 1/3 innings.

As usual, he battled command problems, walking 14 in 17 1/3 innings. However, he fanned 21 and limited hitters to a .175 average. We'd be surprised to see him go unpicked in the Rule 5 draft after the Yankees chose to leave him unprotected.

Kevin Whelan made his season debut Tuesday for Single-A Tampa and pitched two scoreless innings.

Whelan, a product of the Gary Sheffield trade with the Tigers, had been sidelined since the start of the year with a sore elbow. He remains an intriguing relief prospect, but it's not going to happen for him unless he throws more strikes. He had a 96/54 K/BB ratio in 82 1/3 innings last season.

Kevin Whelan pitched five innings and combined with two relievers on a no-hitter for Single-A Tampa on Wednesday.

Whelan was demoted from Double-A last month to become a starter so he could work more on his command. He since has a 1.73 ERA and a 24/10 K/BB ratio in 26 innings. Whelan's long-term future remains in the pen. He has a chance to be a setup man for the Yankees.

Making his first pro start after 94 relief appearances, Kevin Whelan gave up four runs in two innings for Single-A Tampa on Tuesday.

The Yankees apparently want to stretch Whelan out to see if it can help with the command problems. Whelan had a 2.90 ERA in 31 innings as a reliever for Double-A Trenton, but he had issued 25 walks to go along with his 40 strikeouts.

2005 fifth-round pick Kevin Whelan was sent from the Tigers to the Yankees in the Gary Sheffield deal.

Whelan, a Texas A&M product, quickly emerged as one of the Tigers' best prospects after being drafted. He struggled with his command during the early portion of last season, but he impressive over the final three months and finished with a 2.67 ERA and a 69/29 K/BB ratio in 54 innings for Single-A Lakeland. He has closer potential, though it probably won't ever happen with the Yankees. He might be ready to help out by 2008.

Single-A Lakeland's Kevin Whelan pitched three scoreless innings for a relief victory on Monday.

Whelan may have ceased being the Tigers' closer of the future when Joel Zumaya was shifted to the pen, but he's one of the better relief prospects in the minors. Since the start of June, he has a 1.42 ERA and a 50/12 K/BB ratio in 38 innings.
