Tony Abreu has agreed to a contract with the Veracruz Red Eagles of the Mexican League.
Abreu elected to become a free agent last October after being outrighted off the Giants' 40-man roster and he never did find another opportunity in the United States. The 30-year-old infielder was a .254/.283/.373 career hitter in 615 plate appearances at the major league level. Thu, Apr 30, 2015 08:52:00 AM

Tony Abreu has elected to become a free agent.

Abreu was outrighted off the Giants' 40-man roster mid-summer and will now test the open market. The 29-year-old infielder is a .254/.283/.373 career hitter in 615 plate appearances at the major league level.

Giants sent INF Tony Abreu outright to Triple-A Fresno.

Abreu cleared waivers after being designated for assignment. Although he opted out of his minor league deal last month before being re-signed, Abreu has decided to accept the assignment.

Giants designated INF Tony Abreu for assignment.

Abreu was only up in the majors for a couple of days and didn't manage a hit in four plate appearances.

Giants purchased the contract of INF Tony Abreu from Triple-A Fresno.

Abreu was given his release from the Giants just a few days ago, but with the recent injuries to Marco Scutaro and Ehire Adrianza, he finds his way quickly back to the organization and on the big league roster. He'll share time at second base with Dan Uggla for the time being.

Giants released INF Tony Abreu.

Abreu opted out of his contract, presumably when he found out the club had signed Dan Uggla. The veteran infielder batted .281 with six homers and 29 RBI in 64 games for Triple-A Fresno. He should be able to net another minor league deal quickly.

Giants signed INF Tony Abreu to a minor league contract.

The team released Abreu earlier in the week, but he cleared waivers and re-signed with the team on a minor league deal. He'll report to Triple-A Fresno and could be called up mid-season if the team needs a utility infielder.

Giants released INF Tony Abreu.

Abreu had a shot to make the team this spring with Marco Scutaro sidelined, but the infielder hit just .179/.220/.179 in Cactus League play. He'll likely catch on as infield depth elsewhere.

Giants avoided arbitration with INF Tony Abreu by agreeing to a one-year, $745,000 contract.

It was Abreu's first season of arbitration eligibility. The veteran infielder batted .268/.301/.442 with a pair of homers over 53 games for the Giants in 2013 and will serve as a backup at second and third base in 2014.

Giants activated INF Tony Abreu from the 15-day disabled list.

Abreu has been sidelined since late July with bursitis in his left knee. The defensive-minded 28-year-old has slashed .266/.306/.418 with a homer and seven RBI in 79 at-bats for the Giants this season.

Giants placed INF Tony Abreu on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee bursitis.

Abreu has dealt with ongoing knee issues since spring training and has been icing it heavily in recent weeks. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined.

Tony Abreu went 2-for-5 with a double and a home run in the Giants' loss to the Reds on Wednesday.

Abreu now has seven doubles to go with his first home run on the year. Abreu is hitting .326 in 46 at-bats but doesn't have a home on the infield as it stands, limiting whatever fantasy value the journeyman might have.

Making his first start in place of the injured Marco Scutaro, Tony Abreu went 3-for-5 with three runs scored in Wednesday's loss to the Pirates.

Abreu also had a double in Tuesday's game. Scutaro could possibly be out for a while, and Abreu has surely earned more start with tonight's showing. It's possible he could develop some NL-only value.

Giants activated INF Tony Abreu from the 60-day disabled list.

Abreu has been sidelined since mid-February because of a severely strained quadriceps muscle. He will serve as a utility infielder for the Giants going forward and is doubtful to carry any sort of fantasy value.

Giants transferred INF Tony Abreu from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Abreu is working his way back from a strained quad. He's eligible to return now, so this is just a procedural move.
