Rays designated C Hank Conger for assignment.

The move clears a spot for September call-up Justin Marks on the 40-man roster. Conger was expected to platoon behind the plate after coming over from the Astros last winter, but he batted just .194/.265/.306 in 137 plate appearances with the Rays this season.

Rays optioned C Hank Conger to Triple-A Durham.

Conger has batted just .194/.265/.306 in 137 plate appearances this season while allowing 35 stolen bases in 43 attempts. Curt Casali hasn't been any better offensively, but he does play pretty good defense. Look for Casali to get the bulk of the playing time behind the plate coming out of the All-Star break.

Hank Conger has been losing playing time to Curt Casali because he allows too many stolen bases.

Conger usually catches for Chris Archer but Casali got the nod on Monday. Manager Kevin Cash has also been using Casali as a defensive replacement late in games on days when Conger starts. Including wild pitches, Conger hasn't thrown a base-runner out in his last 48 attempts. He's been working to improve that part of his game with catching coach Jamie Nelson. "Right now we’re trying to get the footwork down," said Conger. "Once that happens I think everything else will be fine." Conger hasn't fared much better offensively, hitting only .182 with eight strikeouts in 22 at-bats this year.

Hank Conger is starting at catcher and batting ninth for the Rays in Friday's game versus the Orioles.

It's his third start behind the dish versus two starts for Curt Casali. The two should continue to rotate pretty evenly, although Conger figures to play against most righties.

Hank Conger is back in the Rays' lineup Tuesday.

Curt Casali go the nod at catcher Monday versus Blue Jays knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Conger should start against most right-handers this year, and young righty Aaron Sanchez is on the bump for Toronto on Tuesday night.

Hank Conger will start at catcher for the Rays on Opening Day.

Many thought that it would be Curt Casali, but manager Kevin Cash said that he thought Conger was a better matchup for the Blue Jays' Marcus Stroman. It's a good sign that Conger will start against most right-handers, and he has the potential to be a worthy second fantasy catcher in mixed leagues with that kind of playing time even though he'll bat ninth.

Hank Conger delivered a two-run homer and an RBI single to lead a Rays split-squad to a 14-5 win over the Red Sox on Sunday.

It'll be interesting to see what the Rays do with their catcher spot. They traded for Conger and retained Rene Rivera, but Curt Casali seems like he'd be their best option as a starter, as he offers more defense than Conger and more offense than Rivera. Conger's bat makes him the most intriguing of the bunch for fantasy purposes, but he needs to prove he's over last year's throwing woes to be a viable regular.

Rays and C Hank Conger avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.

He gets a nice raise in his second year of arbitration eligibility after hitting .229/.311/.448 with 11 homers in 2015. Conger should see most of the starts behind the plate against righties for the Rays in 2016.

Rays acquired C Hank Conger from the Astros for cash considerations.

Conger was a non-tender candidate in Houston despite producing a decent .759 OPS and 11 home runs in 73 games (56 starts) this past season for the winners of the American League Wild Card Game. He should see a good amount of action in a platoon rotation with Tampa Bay, but poor defense will continue to prevent him from becoming a regular behind the plate. This won't do much for his fantasy standing.

Hank Conger went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and five total RBI in Friday's 8-0 win over the Twins.

Conger blew open a 3-0 game in the fourth inning, stepping to the plate with the bases juiced and unloading on a Mike Pelfrey offering for a grand slam. He also added an RBI single in the eighth inning, just for fun. For a backup catcher, Conger's done a very nice job, particularly in terms of power. The 27-year-old is hitting .220/.314/.457 with 10 homers and 27 RBI over 164 at-bats.

Hank Conger hit a solo home run and a grand slam in Saturday's win over the Diamondbacks.

The Astros were teeing off on Jeremy Hellickson and the Diamondbacks, with both Conger and Carlos Correa posting two-homer games. It was Conger who came away with the more impressive performance, though. He smoked a solo homer off of Hellickson in the third inning, then crushed a grand slam an inning later to help drive Arizona's starter from the game. Neat game for Conger, who hit ninth in the contest. He's done a nice job in limited action this season and is hitting .254/.352/.508 with eight homers and 20 RBI over 122 at-bats.

Hank Conger homered for the Astros' lone run Thursday against the Indians.

Conger has been outhitting Jason Castro for a couple of months now, but Castro continues to get the bulk of the playing time; he's started six games to Conger's three this month. We wouldn't expect a whole lot to change in the second half. Conger figures to remain the better hitter, but the Astros prefer Castro's glove.

Hank Conger went 2-for-4 with a homer and a double in Thursday's loss to the Orioles.

Conger smacked a solo homer off of Wei-Yin Chen in the third inning. He also doubled in the bottom of the seventh inning to put runners on second and third with nobody out, but the Astros were unable to bring either Conger or Jonathan Villar home in what was their best opportunity to score in the late innings. Over 54 at-bats, the catcher is hitting .204/.317/.426 with three homers and six RBI.

Hank Conger homered for the Astros' lone run Saturday in a 1-1 tie versus the Marlins.

The homer came off Mat Latos. Conger also worked a walk. After opening the spring 2-for-21 while dealing with some wrist soreness, he's 5-for-9 with two homers in his last three games.
