Gregorio Petit hit his first career grand slam Monday off the Astros' Tony Sipp.
It was Petit's fourth homer in 294 career at-bats since he debuted with the A's in 2008. His two homers this year have both come against former teams; the first versus the Yankees (who he played with last year) and tonight's versus Houston. There should be less playing time available for him in the Angels infield now with Andrelton Simmons back, but as desperate as the team is for offense, anyone with a hot hand will get to play somewhere. Angels purchased the contract of INF Gregorio Petit from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Petit was hitting .327/.377/.382 in 61 plate appearances for Triple-A Salt Lake, so he comes to the Angels with some recent success. Because the 31-year-old has never successfully hit in the majors, though, it's difficult to imagine that being more than small-sample variance. He's a utility infielder who should provide much-needed depth until the Angels can get healthy.

Gergorio Petit hit a pair of home runs in Wednesday's win over the Indians.

Both of Petit's homers came against Indians starter Cody Anderson. He cranked the first in the second inning -- a solo shot. Two innings later, he clobbered a two-run bomb. While it never hurts to hit multiple home runs, the 31-year-old infielder is a long shot to crack the Opening Day roster with the Angels. He could see a cup of coffee or three later in the season should the Angels need an additional utility man on the bench.
Mar 16 - 6:30 PM

Angels signed INF Gregorio Petit to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Petit hit just .167/.217/.238 over 20 games with the Yankees last season. The 31-year-old utility infielder will likely provide depth at Triple-A.

Yankees sent INF Gregorio Petit outright to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

He cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and will remain in the organization. Petit has been up-and-down from the majors and minors multiple times this season.

Yankees designated INF Gregorio Petit for assignment.

The move clears a 40-man roster spot for reliever Nick Goody, who joined the Yankees on Saturday. Petit, 30, is a .254/.282/.358 career hitter in 82 major league games. There's a pretty good chance he clears waivers.

Yankees activated INF Gregorio Petit from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre.

Petit had been on the shelf with a right hand contusion since May 6. He hit .200/.256/.286 with 13 strikeouts in 40 plate appearances with the Yankees. He'll serve as minor league infield depth for the time being, though could see additional major league time if the Yankees are in need of a utility bat off the bench in the future.

Yankees optioned INF Gregorio Petit to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Tuesday's starter, Chase Whitley, will take his spot on the active roster. Petit, 30, was batting .208 (5-for-24) with three doubles and five RBI over 13 games with the Yankees this season. The Yankees don't figure to go without a backup middle infielder for long, so it's possible that Jose Pirela (concussion) could be activated soon.
