The White Sox are expected to call up left-hander Donnie Veal from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday.

Veal struggled with the White Sox earlier this season, but hasn't allowed a run in four appearances (eight innings) at the Triple-A level. The 28-year-old will provide bullpen depth as a left-handed specialist.

Donnie Veal notched his first career save in Monday's win over the Indians.

Matt Thornton started the ninth inning for the Sox with a two-run lead and two lefties and a switch-hitter due up. The Sox had to turn to Veal after Thornton allowed a couple singles and an RBI double, and Veal got Jason Kipnis to ground out to win it. Addison Reed was nowhere to be found, as it's clear the Sox are going with matchups in the ninth inning at this point.

Veal has a cool 2.08 ERA and 61/23 K/BB ratio in 52 innings this season at the Triple-A level. The left-hander should do well in middle relief for the White Sox.

Veal, a 27-year-old southpaw, only lasted four days with the club. He returns to a 2.03 ERA and 53 strikeouts over 43 1/3 innings for Charlotte. Veal has struggled with command despite his success, walking 21. He should be near the front of the line the next time Chicago needs a bullpen arm.

He has been added to the 40-man roster. Veal, a 27-year-old southpaw, made his way back from Tommy John surgery this season, posting a 4.22 ERA and 31/15 K/BB ratio over 32 innings between four levels in Pittsburgh's minor league system.

Donald Veal has been placed on Triple-A Indianapolis' disabled list due to arm fatigue.

Veal is coming back from Tommy John surgery and has struggled to this point, posting a 5.71 ERA over 15 games, though he has struck out over a batter per inning. Hopefully this is just a minor bump in the road in his recovery, but it's tough to say at this point.

Donald Veal will be used as a reliever after recently being promoted to Double-A.

The Pirates still aren't sure whether his long-term role will be as a starter or reliever, but for now he'll work out of the bullpen. Working his way back from Tommy John surgery, Veal posted a 4.26 ERA while striking out 10 over 6 1/3 innings for High-A Bradenton before the promotion.

The Pirates have assigned LHP Donald Veal to High-A Bradenton.

Veal is coming back from Tommy John surgery and will work his way back up through the lower minors first. He's unlikely to have a shot to be recalled before the second half.

Donnie Veal (elbow) threw a supervised bullpen session on Tuesday.

Veal underwent Tommy John surgery last June, so he still has a while to go in his rehab. The former top prospect is unlikely to pitch in a competitive game until after the regular season begins.

Donnie Veal (elbow) is expected to be ready for live action in early June.

Veal underwent Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow in the middle of last season and will probably remain idle all spring long as a precautionary measure. "The rehab is going great," Pirates GM Neal Huntington said Monday. "He feels great. The throwing program has gone very well for him. It would be very easy to speed it up, but he needs time to heal."

Pirates re-signed LHP Donnie Veal to a minor league contract.

Veal will miss the first half of the 2011 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The former Rule 5 pick was used as a starter in 2010 before his injury but has pitched out of the bullpen, as well.

Pirates GM Neal Huntington is optimistic about re-signing both Donnie Veal and Brian Burres, who were non-tendered by the team.

Veal is expected to miss the first half of the 2011 season following Tommy John surgery, while Burres made 13 starts for the Bucs in 2010 with mixed results. Neither player is likely to make a significant impact if re-signed.
