Scott Van Slyke (back) will not be cleared to participate in baseball activities until next week.

And next week would be the earliest he will be cleared for baseball activities. Van Slyke could miss upwards of a month in total. Manager Dave Roberts indicated on Sunday that at the very least, the outfielder will miss more than the 15-day minimum on the disabled list. He has been battling lower back irritation since just after Opening Day.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that Scott Van Slyke (back) will miss more than the minimum 15 days on the disabled list.

His stint on the disabled list was backdated to April 10, but he will not be ready for activation when the 15 days are up in late April. The Dodgers are rolling with Howie Kendrick in left field on Sunday and could continue to do so, allowing he and Chase Utley to be in the lineup together.

The Rangers had the lead in the top of the ninth inning before Jefri Hernandez uncorked a wild pitch which allowed Corey Brown to score from third base. The teams elected to not play extra innings. Van Slyke dealt with multiple injuries last season while batting just .239 with six home runs and a .700 OPS over 253 plate appearances. He’s capable of doing some damage against left-handed pitching, but there are some playing time questions in the Dodgers’ outfield.

This is his first of four years of arbitration as a Super 2 qualifier. Van Slyke earned just over the major league minimum ($522,500) in 2015 while batting .239/.317/.383 with six home runs and 30 RBI in 96 games. He had a .910 OPS and 11 homers in 98 games in 2014.

Van Slyke dealt with soreness in his right hand and wrist down the stretch and still isn't able to hit without pain. He could be a factor in future rounds, but he's just not ready yet. His absence will likely open up a spot on the roster for Yasiel Puig.

Unfortunately, manager Don Mattingly later indicated that the swings didn't go particularly well. Van Slyke was hopeful to take batting practice, but his wrist simply isn't up to speed yet. He was given a cortisone shot on Friday, but his status for the team's NLDS showdown with the Mets remains clouded.

He has been in and out of the lineup for most of September due to soreness in his hand and wrist, and has been unable to take batting practice for the past few days. As of now, he's still expected to be a part of the Dodgers postseason roster, but any further setbacks could change that.

He hasn't played since Tuesday because of a hand injury. Justin Ruggiano and Chris Heisey will handle the two corner outfield slots on Saturday. Van Slyke remains day-to-day.
