Orioles signed LHP Will Startup to a minor league contract.

Startup, a 2005 fifth-round pick, has never appeared in a major league game and isn't likely to find his way to Baltimore this season. He had a 4.76 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP between Single-A and Triple-A in 2009.

Will Startup retired four batters Tuesday to lower his ERA in the AFL to 0.96.

Startup, a 2005 fifth-round pick, was dealt from from Atlanta to San Diego for Royce Ring at the deadline. An extreme flyball pitcher, he could be quite a setup man for the Padres with Petco helping him along.

Left-hander Will Startup was traded from the Braves to the Padres in a three-player deal.

Startup, a 2005 third-round pick, has a pretty good chance of becoming a decent reliever, and his extreme flyball tendencies could lead to some low ERAs in Petco. He had a 2.19 ERA and a 49/18 K/BB ratio in 49 1/3 IP for Triple-A Richmond. Expect to see him in the majors later this year.

Will Startup gave up four runs in one-third of an inning on Monday and has a 16.71 ERA in the AFL.

He's allowed 17 runs -- 13 earned -- in seven innings. Startup, a 2005 fifth-round pick, spent much of the season at Triple-A and finished with a 2.35 ERA in 69 innings between three levels. It was looking like he could be of some use in the Atlanta pen during the first half of next season, but his struggles this fall have to be viewed as a setback.

2005 fifth-round pick Will Startup pitched a scoreless inning Friday in his second appearance for Triple-A Richmond.

Pitching at three levels, Startup has allowed two runs in 29 2/3 innings of relief this season. The Braves might try him as a lefty reliever later this season.

Will Startup made his first appearance for Double-A Mississippi on Tuesday and pitched two scoreless innings.

Startup, a left-handed reliever drafted in the fifth round in 2005, made just one appearance at Single-A Myrtle Beach before being moved up.
