The Marlins have demoted Kevin Slowey to the bullpen.
Slowey is clearing the way for the return of Nathan Eovaldi to the rotation. "Slowey's going to be kind of that swing man, that long guy, to come in and throw multiple innings," said manager Mike Redmond. "That'll be how it goes now for a while." Slowey got off to a great start this season but has posted a 7.08 ERA over his last seven appearances. Tom Koehler will remain in the rotation for now, but Henderson Alvarez is due back soon. Kevin Slowey allowed six runs -- five earned -- in five innings to take the loss against the Brewers on Wednesday.

Of the nine hits Slowey gave up, two were triples and one was a home run, accounting for four of the six runs allowed. On the plus side, he did strike out six while walking none. The loss moved him to 2-6 on the season. He'll start in Arizona on Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.

Kevin Slowey will make his next start on Wednesday.

Slowey was supposed to start Sunday but wound up getting a win after pitching seven shutout innings in relief during Saturday's 20-inning contest. He'll be starting on short rest against the Brewers.
Jun 9 - 11:57 AM

Kevin Slowey allowed four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Rays.

He struck out four. Despite the pretty uninspiring effort, Slowey left in line for the win. Unfortunately, Ryan Webb allowed both of Slowey's inherited runners to score, saddling the starter with a no-decision. The good news is that Slowey's left lat, which forced him from his last start, didn't appear to be an issue. He'll get the Mets this weekend.
May 28 - 11:01 PM

Kevin Slowey (lat) said he's a "go" for his scheduled start Tuesday after completing a bullpen session Saturday with no issues.

Slowey had to leave his last outing with a left lat strain, but it was obviously very minor. He boasts a 3.30 ERA and 1.22 WHIP this season and isn't a bad streaming option Tuesday in Tampa.
May 26 - 1:08 PM

Kevin Slowey left Wednesday's start against the Phillies after the fifth inning with a left lat strain.

The Marlins are calling him day-to-day, so it's evidently a minor strain. He will be reevaluated on Thursday before it's determined whether he can make his next start. Slowey was pitching well Wednesday before getting hurt, tossing five innings of one-run ball on six hits and no walks while recording six strikeouts.
May 22 - 8:59 PM

Kevin Slowey had to leave Wednesday's start against the Phillies after the fifth inning with an apparent injury.

Slowey was warming up before the top of the sixth before manager Mike Redmond and the trainer visited him on the mound. After a brief discussion, the righty exited the field. It's not clear at this point what ailment he's dealing with. Slowey allowed just one run over five frames before exiting.
May 22 - 8:40 PM

Kevin Slowey was knocked around in Friday’s loss to the Diamondbacks, surrendering six runs on seven hits in only three innings of work.

Slowey walked one and struck out one in the brief outing. His undoing on this evening was his inability to keep the ball in the yard, as he allowed three home runs, including a pair of two-run shots to Paul Goldschmidt. Despite his 1-4 record, Slowey has actually pitched very well for the Marlins this season, posting a 3.44 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 37/12 K/BB ratio over his first 52 1/3 innings. He’ll attempt to get back on track when he takes on the Phillies at home on Wednesday.
May 17 - 9:54 PM

Kevin Slowey was handed a loss after giving up five runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Dodgers on Friday.

Slowey allowed 11 hits, walked three and struck out none tonight, so his fantasy owners should be counting their lucky stars that he gave up just the five runs. He's a better play in fantasy leagues when the Marlins are at home.
May 12 - 12:19 AM

Kevin Slowey hurled seven scoreless innings in the Marlins' defeat of the Phillies on Sunday.

Slowey allowed just two hits and two walks while fanning seven. He has been a major surprise here in the early part of the 2013 season, boasting a 1.81 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 36/8 K/BB ratio in 44 2/3 innings. The righty faces a tough test next time out against the Dodgers.
May 5 - 5:47 PM

Kevin Slowey didn't pick up a win but held the Mets to one run over eight innings in Tuesday's 2-1 victory.

Slowey allowed just four hits, struck out a season-high eight and didn't walk anyone. He failed to earn his first win of the season, though, as the Marlins needed a two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth to tally the win. Despite no victories, Slowey boasts a surprising 2.15 ERA and 1.01 WHIP this season. He should be owned in deeper mixed leagues at this point, though his supporting cast obviously holds him back. Slowey pitches in Philly this weekend.
Apr 30 - 9:55 PM

Kevin Slowey pitched well in a no-decision against the Reds on Friday, allowing just one run on four hits over six strong innings.

Slowey punched out four on the evening while walking one. He has been a very pleasant surprise in the Marlins rotation in the early going, posting a 1.90 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 15/6 K/BB ratio over 23 2/3 innings. As well as he’s pitched, poor offensive support means he’ll head into Thursday’s start against the Cubs still in search of his first victory. He’s starting to be worth a look as a matchup play in deeper mixed leagues.
Apr 19 - 10:10 PM

Kevin Slowey held the Phillies to one run on nine hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision Sunday.

He struck out four. The Phillies had no trouble getting baserunners against the right-hander, but Slowey was able to limit the damage. Slowey boasts a 2.04 ERA through his first three starts this season but is still looking for his first win. He'll try again next weekend in Cincinnati.
Apr 14 - 4:05 PM

Kevin Slowey was a hard-luck loser after allowing two runs in seven innings Monday against the Braves.

The Marlins will likely have a bunch of hard-luck losers this season. Slowey, for instance, has an 0-2 record to go along with his 2.19 ERA. With the way he's throwing, he's a viable play in NL-only leagues, particularly in his home starts. His flyball tendencies will lead to bad days in smaller parks.
Apr 8 - 10:15 PM

Kevin Slowey allowed just one run over 5 1/3 innings Wednesday but was the tough-luck loser as the Marlins lost to the Nationals.

Slowey, 28, has to be encouraged with the start. He allowed just a solo home run to his counterpart, Gio Gonzalez, for the only scoring against him. After throwing only 59 1/3 innings for the Twins in 2012, Slowey is working to resurrect his career with the Marlins.
