Starting for the first time in five days, Kyle Blanks homered and walked Wednesday against the Orioles.
Carlos Quentin will probably prove to be a better hitter than Blanks this season, but there's no doubt the Padres would have been better off starting Blanks regularly in his place over the first month and a half. Quentin did have a hit today, though: his popup to shallow right got lost in the sun by Ryan Flaherty. If only he had run it out rather than sulked, he would have had a double instead of a single. Date:

Kyle Blanks (shoulder) is not in the lineup Monday.

He should be available off the bench, though. Blanks banged up his left shoulder and suffered a cut above his left eye when he collided with the outfield wall Sunday. He'll be fine, but, unfortunately for him, Carlos Quentin will be back from suspension Tuesday, so it's back to the bench.
Apr 22 - 9:48 PM

Kyle Blanks needed four stitches above his left eye as a result of his sunglasses cutting him during a collision with the outfield wall in Sunday's loss to the Giants.

Blanks is considered day-to-day for now, but a stint on the disabled list can't be ruled out. The Padres were giving Blanks an extended look in left field prior to the injury. He was hitless in two at-bats before being removed.
Apr 21 - 7:36 PM

Kyle Blanks left Sunday's game with an apparent left shoulder injury.

Blanks ran into the outfield wall face-first making a catch and had to be removed from the game. The Padres should provide an update on his status soon.
Apr 21 - 6:04 PM

Kyle Blanks went 2-for-3 and hit his first home run of the year Wednesday off the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw.

Blanks is worthy of a long look, but he's only up right now because Carlos Quentin got suspended. There's not going to be much room for him after Quentin returns, but odds are that Quentin will spend some time on the DL later on.
Apr 18 - 1:52 AM

Padres recalled OF/1B Kyle Blanks from Triple-A Tucson.

With Carlos Quentin likely to begin serving his suspension on Monday, the Padres need some outfield depth. Blanks was batting .296/.424/.519 with a homer early on at Triple-A and should see a handful of starts in left field while Quentin is out.
Apr 14 - 1:47 PM

Padres optioned OF/1B Kyle Blanks to Triple-A Tucson.

The oft-injured 26-year-old slugger did everything in his power to earn a spot on the Padres' Opening Day roster, hitting .359/.442/.609 with three homers and 14 RBI in 64 at-bats on the spring. As long as he remains healthy, he'll likely mash at the Triple-A level and earn a promotion to serve as a backup outfielder and first baseman for the Padres. If he finds his way into everyday at-bats, owners in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues should surely take notice.

Kyle Blanks hit his second home run of the Cactus League in the Padres loss to the Rangers Saturday.

Blanks, 26, was once a top prospect for the Padres before injuries derailed his career. Now healthy, Blanks is making a push for a bench role with the team. The hulking Blanks has played both first base and corner outfield in his career.
Mar 9 - 6:24 PM

Kyle Blanks blasted a solo homer and added a sac fly in Monday's loss to the Rangers.

The longball came off of Neal Cotts in the fifth inning. Blanks is kind of a forgotten man in San Diego, but he's crushing the ball so far this spring, batting .476 over his first 27 plate appearances. He's slated to open the year either on the bench or at Triple-A.
Mar 4 - 7:43 PM

Padres and OF/1B Kyle Blanks avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $605,000 contract.

Blanks was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. The former top prospect was limited to just four games with the Padres this season prior to undergoing surgery in late-April to repair the labrum in his left shoulder. The Padres already have their outfield in place while Yonder Alonso is locked in as the starter at first base, so Blanks could be trade bait this winter.

Padres activated OF/1B Kyle Blanks from the 60-day disabled list.

Blanks appeared in just four games with the Padres this season prior to undergoing surgery in late-April to repair the labrum in his left shoulder. The former top prospect could be non-tendered this offseason.

Padres transferred INF-OF Kyle Blanks from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

It's just a procedural move to get him off the 40-man roster, as Blanks is already out for the season following surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder.

Kyle Blanks underwent season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair his left posterior labrum.

Blanks needs 4-6 months of recovery time, but should be ready for spring training. Still, this is yet another tough blow for the former top prospect. The 25-year-old has been limited to just 92 games at the big league level since slugging 10 homers and posting an .868 OPS over 172 plate appearances back in 2009.

Kyle Blanks will have season-ending surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder.

He was placed on the disabled list on April 14 with what was deemed a shoulder strain at the time, but obviously there was more going on. Blanks' 2009 season ended due to plantar fasciitis, he missed the second half of 2010 and first half of 2011 following Tommy John surgery, and now he's looking at another lost season. He was once a top prospect and is still just 25, but his future is now looking cloudy. The Pads do expect Blanks to be healthy for the start of next season.

Padres placed OF Kyle Blanks on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain.

The Padres had to make a roster move in order to activate Joe Wieland for Saturday's start. Blanks has been battling this shoulder ailment since early in the spring and appeared to tweak the injury in Friday's game. Jesus Guzman and Will Venable will continue to draw the starts in the corner outfield spots for the Padres.
