Red Sox signed 1B Mark Hamilton to a minor league contract.

The deal includes an invitation to spring training. Hamilton struggled in his brief time with the Cardinals and at Triple-A last season, but he posted an OPS over .900 from 2009-11 in the minors.

Cardinals released 1B Mark Hamilton.

Hamilton spent the entire year with the Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate, and clears a spot on the minor league roster for Matt Young. He'll look to latch on elsewhere as organizational depth.

Cardinals optioned 1B Mark Hamilton to Triple-A Memphis.

Hamilton saw an occasional start at first base while Albert Pujols was sidelined with a fractured wrist but was no longer needed now that the Cardinals' core is back to full health. The 26-year-old could be recalled later this summer.

Cardinals recalled 1B Mark Hamilton from Triple-A Memphis.

Hamilton should get a decent amount of looks at first base over the next month-plus as Albert Pujols recovers from a left forearm fracture. The 26-year-old has posted quality numbers at the Triple-A level this season but is unlikely to carry much in the way of fantasy value.

The Cardinals will recall first baseman Mark Hamilton before Tuesday's game against the Phillies.

St. Louis is likely to play Lance Berkman at first base and Jon Jay in right field in most matchups, but Hamilton could also see time with Albert Pujols out a month-plus due to a fractured forearm. Hamilton, 26, has posted a remarkable .385/.504/.538 batting line in 27 games at the Triple-A level this season but he only has five hits in 42 career major league plate appearances.

Cardinals optioned 1B-OF Mark Hamilton to Triple-A Memphis.

Hamilton has posted a superb .391/.509/.552 batting line at Memphis this season, but he's been unable to find his niche as a pinch-hitter with the Cardinals. He'll go back to playing every day on the farm.

Cardinals recalled 1B Mark Hamilton from Triple-A Memphis.

A first baseman by trade, Hamilton will likely see some time in the outfield during his recall thanks to the absence of Matt Holliday. Although he went just 3-for-15 during a call-up earlier this season, he has been raking at Memphis, posting a .391/.509/.552 slash in 25 games.

Cardinals optioned 1B Mark Hamilton to Triple-A Memphis.

Hamilton saw only 16 plate appearances in his month with the Cards and managed just three hits. He didn't start a game and only played 3 1/3 innings in the field.

Cardinals recalled 1B Mark Hamilton from Triple-A Memphis.

Hamilton may get a start or two in the next couple of days if the Cardinals want to give Albert Pujols a game off, but he's not versatile and won't see much action otherwise. He can be ignored in fantasy leagues.

The Cardinals will call up Mark Hamilton before Tuesday's game against the Nationals.

Hamilton slugged three home runs and tallied seven RBI across 45 at-bats in Cardinals camp this spring. He's not very versatile in the field, though, and won't get many starts behind Albert Pujols at first base.

Mark Hamilton hit his second homer in 19 spring at-bats Sunday off the Marlins' Brian Sanches.

Hamilton hit .298/.389/.585 in Triple-A last season and he's played well in limited action the last two springs, but it doesn't appear that anyone has made a significant bid for his services. He's incapable of playing the outfield in the majors, and the Cardinals, of course, lack room for him at first base. Maybe the team will hold on to him as a potential option if Albert Pujols leaves, though we doubt Hamilton is looking forward to spending another summer in Triple-A.

Mark Hamilton hit his third and fourth homers for Double-A Springfield on Sunday.

All four homers have come in his last eight games. The 2006 second-round pick is hitting .290/.429/.532 in his second year in the Texas League. He's not really in the Cardinals plans, and it doesn't look like he'll turn into the quality trade bait it was hoped he'd become after he was drafted. Still, he's not hopeless just yet.

Single-A Palm Beach's Mark Hamilton had a three-homer game Monday.

He drove in six and drew a walk. Hamilton also homered in Palm Beach's previous two games, so he'd doubled his season total from five to 10 this month. The 2006 second-round pick is batting .308/.350/.527 in 182 at-bats.

Mark Hamilton hit a pair of homers Wednesday for Single-A Palm Beach.

Hamilton posted terrific OBPs as well as power numbers at Tulane, but he's at .275/.293/.462 so far this year and he had just a .325 OBP after being drafted in the second round last year. Since he's pretty well limited to first base and makes even more sense as a DH, it's hard to see how he has a future in St. Louis.
