Justin Christian has elected free agency.

The 32-year-out outfielder slashed a stellar .343/.409/.508 with seven homers, 35 RBI and 12 steals in 72 games for Triple-A Fresno in 2012, but struggled in his limited time with the Giants. He'll likely have to accept a minor league deal with the chance to compete for a reserve outfielder role in spring training.

Christian injured the wrist while making a fantastic diving catch on Wednesday night. The Giants have called up Francisco Peguero to replace him on the active roster, but they figure to step up their efforts to land an outfielder before August 31.

Christian was dealing with quite a bit of swelling after the game and may even need a stint on the 15-day disabled list. "I jammed it pretty good," said the 32-year-old backup outfielder. "I hope it’s nothing major." The Giants could consider promoting Xavier Nady from Triple-A Fresno.

This confirms a report by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Christian, 32, batted .158 (6-for-38) in a previous stint with the Giants earlier this season. He'll provide some extra depth in the outfield following Melky Cabrera's suspension, but he shouldn't be on your fantasy radar.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Giants are planning to promote outfielder Justin Christian from Triple-A Fresno.

He'll presumably take the roster spot of Melky Cabrera, who was handed a 50-game suspension Wednesday for testing positive for Testosterone. Christian, 32, batted .158 (6-for-38) in a previous stint with the Giants earlier this season. Gregor Blanco is expected to get most of the playing time in left field, but the Giants are seeking additional help for their outfield.

Justin Christian had a terrific night in a rare start for the Giants, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a stolen base in Thursday's loss to the Nationals.

Christian got the call in right field and was inserted into the leadoff slot in manager Bruce Bochy's lineup, and surely answered the call. He had only received eight at-bats on the season before Thursday's game, and could earn more looks over Gregor Blanco when facing left-handed starters. He isn't worthy of mixed league consideration at this point.

Giants re-signed OF Justin Christian to a minor league contract.

Christian was released off the Giants' 40-man roster earlier this week but spent mere hours on the free agent market. The 31-year-old batted .294/.376/.459 last season between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Fresno, and will continue to function as organizational outfield depth this year for San Francisco.

Dr. James Andrews recommended surgery and reportedly expressed amazement that Garcia pitched as well as he did earlier this season under the circumstances. The Cardinals' team doctor will perform the shoulder procedure. It's safe to say that Garcia will not contribute in a meaningful way for the rest of the 2013 season. May 22

	6	Chris Carpenter D.L. CBS Sports' Scott Miller reports that the Cardinals are hoping that Chris Carpenter (shoulder, neck) is able to join the starting rotation in late June or early July. Carpenter was originally considered unlikely to pitch this season due to a lingering nerve condition in his shoulder and neck. However, he has been encouraged by his throwing program and has suddenly progressed from an option for the bullpen to the starting rotation. The 38-year-old has already stretched himself out to 80 pitches and could begin facing live hitters next week if all goes well.
