The former first-rounder hasn't appeared in the majors since 2008 and is coming off a horrid showing in 2012, having batted .201/.324/.286 over 44 games at Triple-A for the Orioles and Yankees. He's merely organizational depth.

The move clears a 40-man roster spot for Chad Qualls. New York claimed Antonelli off waivers from the Orioles in mid-May and he's been playing at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since that time. Antonelli should clear waivers and remain in the organization, unless another franchise wants to snipe him as minor league depth, as New York did to Baltimore.

Yankees claimed INF Matt Antonelli off waivers from the Orioles; assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Antonelli was designated for assignment by the O's earlier this week after batting just .204/.357/.280 at Triple-A Norfolk. He will serve as depth for the Yanks.

Antonelli had a chance at a utility infield job this spring, but batted just .194 (6-for-31) with zero extra-base hits. Ryan Flaherty now appears to be in good shape to make the Opening Day roster.

The deal was agreed to late last week, then made official on Monday after Antonelli passed his physical in Baltimore. The 26-year-old infielder batted .298/.390/.457 in the minor leagues this past season and will now serve as organizational depth for the Orioles.

Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com reports that the Orioles have signed infielder Matt Antonelli, pending a physical.

He is expected to receive a big league deal, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun. Antonelli, who turns 27 next April, batted .298/.390/.457 with eight homers, 31 RBI and an .847 OPS over 374 plate appearances this season between Double- and Triple-A in the Nationals' organization. He hasn't appeared in the big leagues since 2008 as a member of the Padres and is unlikely to crack the O's Opening Day roster.

The 25-year-old infielder was non-tendered by the Padres earlier this month. He hasn't appeared in a major league game since 2008 and will probably struggle to reach the bigs in a Nationals uniform.

Antonelli, 25, hasn't appeared in a major league game since back in 2008, when he went 11-for-57 (.193) in a short look with the Padres. Because of his youth, some other organization should give him a shot.

Padres placed 2B Matt Antonelli (hand) on the 60-day disabled list.

Antonelli had surgery to repair his broken hamate bone on Thursday, which will cost him about eight weeks of recovery time. The Padres can now use his spot on the 40-man roster for someone else until he's ready to resume playing, which will likely be sometime this summer.

Matt Antonelli underwent surgery Thursday to repair the hamate bone in his left hand and will miss the next eight weeks.

The 25-year-old did his best to avoid having a procedure, but his progress was slow. The surgery should help fix some of his issues. Antonelli had a great spring, batting .378/.410/.568 with one homer and eight RBI over 37 Cactus League at-bats. He could see some big league action in September.

Matt Antonelli is scheduled to undergo surgery Thursday to repair the injury to the hambate bone in his left hand.

Antonelli tried rehabbing it, but hasn't made enough progress for the Padres' liking. He is expected to be sidelined for four-to-six weeks and will report to Triple-A Portland once he's ready for full-time action.

Matt Antonelli (hand) was able to take batting practice Friday for the first time in over a week.

Antonelli is getting a late start this season. He hit in the cage Friday and told MLB.com that his hand was "feeling a little better than what it was last week, but still not 100 percent." The 25-year-old is expected to report to Triple-A Portland once his hand is back to full strength.
