Dodgers signed RHP Jose Ascanio to a minor league contract.

The deal includes an invitation to spring training. Ascanio had a brief stint with the Pirates this past season, but spent the majority of the year in the minors, posting a 5.29 ERA and 56/16 K/BB ratio over 47 2/3 innings between Triple-A Indianapolis and High-A Bradenton. He has struggled to get his career back on track following shoulder surgery in October of 2009 and is unlikely to make a major impact in the Dodgers' bullpen.

Jose Ascanio (elbow, head) is scheduled to make his final minor league rehab appearance Monday with Triple-A Indianpolis.

Ascanio, who has been working his way back from right shoulder surgery, has a 9.00 ERA over nine appearances between High-A Bradenton and Triple-A Indianapolis. Minor league rehab assignments can only last 30 days for pitchers, so the Pirates will make to make a move this week. Jose Ascaino complained of tightness in his right elbow after throwing his first bullpen session on Sunday.

Ascaino missed the beginning of camp due to an issue with his visa, but the Pirates believe he is already ahead in his throwing program because he pitched in winter ball through December. "He can catch up quickly," said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington. "As a reliever, this won't set him back at all." The 25-year-old right-hander missed most of last season recovering from shoulder surgery and was pulled from a rehab stint with High-A Bradenton last August due to an injury to his right hand. He enters spring training out of options.
