Rockies transferred RHP Adam Ottavino from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The move cleared a spot on the 40-man roster for Yohan Flande. Ottavino, of course, is done for the season following Tommy John surgery. May 15 - 9:06 AM

Adam Ottavino underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Thursday.

Ottavino is done for the season and his rehab will likely stretch into the early part of 2016. It's a tough break for the 29-year-old, who recently got his first chance as a closer and appeared primed for a big season. John Axford is now handling save chances for Colorado.

Adam Ottavino revealed Monday that he's likely to have Tommy John surgery to repair a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

The warning alarm was sounded when it was reported last Friday that Ottavino was seeking multiple opinions on his elbow, and the reliever's worst fears have come true. It's brutal news for Ottavino, as he had taken over the Rockies' closer role and appeared poised for a breakthrough season. He'll now be sidelined likely until around midseason next year. John Axford has assumed the ninth inning role for the Rox, although it's possible LaTroy Hawkins could eventually get another shot when he returns from a biceps injury.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that Adam Ottavino (triceps, elbow) is in the process of seeking multiple opinions from orthopedists.

Ottavino is nursing injuries to both his triceps and elbow and it's probably not a good sign that the Rockies are still trying to get a better handle on what exactly he's dealing with. More should be known about his status before long. John Axford is currently filling in as Colorado's closer.
May 1 - 1:02 PM

Adam Ottavino said he's "definitely worried" about his right elbow after it was found he has inflammation in the elbow.

"I'm definitely worried. I haven't been on the DL for something in like four years. I love to pitch. I'd really like to be out there. It's kind of weird. I haven't had any elbow/triceps issues in my whole career," Ottavino said. The right-hander is still with the team despite being on the disabled list, suggesting that the club isn't too concerned with the long-term outlook for Ottavino's arm. He's shut down for now and more should be known about his prognosis after the team returns to Denver on Monday.
Apr 29 - 10:59 PM

An MRI has revealed that, in addition to right triceps inflammation, Adam Ottavino also has inflammation in his elbow.

A more specific diagnosis won't be available until early next week, but it's looking like Ottavino will be on the shelf longer than initially expected. "It's more than I thought it would be," Ottavino said. "Now I'm just waiting to find out more." John Axford will handle the closing duties for the Rockies while Ottavino is out.

Apr 28 - 7:12 PM

Rockies placed RHP Adam Ottavino on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 26, with right triceps inflammation.

It's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined, but obviously it's good news that he appears to have no structural damage. John Axford picked up a save last week while Ottavino was unavailable and looks like the guy to own in fantasy leagues.
Apr 27 - 6:02 PM

Adam Ottavino is currently dealing with slight soreness in his lower triceps.

The Rockies said that Ottavino was unavailable on Thursday due to general soreness, and now the area for concern is known. John Axford filled in admirably in a save chance Thursday and would stand to benefit the most if Ottavino was forced to miss any significant amount of time.
Apr 23 - 7:26 PM

Adam Ottavino notched the win in relief after the Rockies came back to beat the Padres 5-4 on Wednesday.

Ottavino worked a perfect ninth in a tie game before Daniel Descalso won it in the bottom of the ninth. Ottavino is off to a ridiculous start, with just one hit allowed and 12 strikeouts in 8 1/3 scoreless innings.
Apr 22 - 11:52 PM

Adam Ottavino notched a save on the second consecutive day Wednesday against the Giants.

He struck out two. On Monday, Ottavino had one career save. He's recorded two in the past 48 hours and should earn plenty more if he keeps mocking gravity with that slider. LaTroy Hawkins fended off father time to retain closer jobs for years, but Ottavino is proving to be a more formidable foe. Rockies manager Walt Weiss has officially given Ottavino the job and the leash doesn't figure to be short. Ottavino, who hasn't given up a run this year, should be on zero waiver wires. Right the wrong if your fellow owners are snoozing.
Apr 16 - 1:13 AM

Adam Ottavino struck out all three batters he faced to pick up his first save of the season Tuesday against the Giants.

He fanned Brandon Crawford, Justin Maxwell, and Norichika Aoki in succession, looking so good that Rockies manager Walt Weiss named him the team's closer after the game. Rafael Betancourt, who earned the save Monday with Ottavino unavailable, pitched the eighth and allowed a run, helping Ottavino shine even brighter on Tuesday. Ottavino has been solid over the last two seasons in Colorado and obviously needs to be owned in fantasy leagues at the moment.
Apr 15 - 1:29 AM

Rockies manager Walt Weiss said Thursday that he'd be confident in using Adam Ottavino as his closer on days when LaTroy Hawkins needs a break.

"Adam has 'back end of the game' stuff," Weiss said. "There are times when we'll have to use a closer by committee, and he would certainly be one of those options." Hawkins enters 2015 as the unquestioned closer after a surprisingly solid 2014 campaign, but he's 42 and retiring after the season, so the Rockies need to groom a replacement. Ottavino appears to be clearly second in line ahead of Rex Brothers and could eventually take over the ninth inning at some point in 2015.

Rockies and RHP Adam Ottavino avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.3 million contract.

It's just above the midpoint of figures exchanged earlier this month. Ottavino is coming off a fine season for Colorado, having posted a 3.60 ERA and 70/16 K/BB ratio across 65 innings. He'll again help set up LaTroy Hawkins in 2015.
Jan 26 - 8:07 PM

Adam Ottavino requested $1.475 million and was offered $1 million from the Rockies when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

It is the first time that the 29-year-old has been arbitration eligible and comes on the heels of two strong seasons in the Rockies bullpen. He's a sneaky candidate to accrue saves this season for those speculating.
Jan 16 - 7:11 PM

Adam Ottavino worked a scoreless 10th inning to pick up his first save of the season as the Rockies defeated the Cubs on Wednesday.

Regular closer LaTroy Hawkins was unavailable after pitching two innings in Tuesday night's 16-inning affair. Ottavino got two quick outs before allowing Starlin Castro to reach on a single, but was able to get Luis Valbuena to line out to end the contest. With the Rockies likely to hang on to Hawkins, per reports, save opportunities will continue to be few and far between for Ottavino, who has a 3.80 ERA on the season.
