Brennan Boesch has been taking ground balls at first base.

Boesch hasn’t played the position since high school, but the Yankees want him comfortable enough at the position as another option beyond Lyle Overbay and Kevin Youkilis. "If I was horrible, I’d tell them, don’t even try," Boesch said. "But I feel like every day I get a little better and every day I feel like I can help the team if they need me over there soon enough."

Brennan Boesch (rib cage) doesn't believe his rib cage injury to be a concern.

"I wouldn't classify this as an injury," said the outfielder. It sounds like Boesch probably doesn't have an oblique injury, which is a relief since it surely would have kept him out Opening Day. The Yankees haven't provided an update on his status, but it appears to be a day-to-day situation.
Mar 22 - 3:35 PM

Brennan Boesch was scratched from Friday's lineup with a stiff left rib cage.

It was Boesch's right oblique that he tweaked earlier this spring when he was still with the Tigers. While it's good that it's not an aggravation of the previous injury, his status for Opening Day should probably be considered up in the air.

Brennan Boesch will make his Yankees' debut Saturday.

Boesch was signed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal after being released by the Tigers earlier this week. He should see the majority of his playing time in a left field platoon with Matt Diaz, but could also battle injury-prone Travis Hafner for some at-bats at the DH spot.
Mar 16 - 9:29 AM

Yankees signed OF Brennan Boesch to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported the agreement on Friday afternoon, and it has now been made official. Boesch struggled mightily in 2012 with the Tigers, but he's just a year removed from hitting .283/.341/.458 with 16 homers and 54 RBI in just 423 at-bats. His left-handed power should play well at Yankee Stadium.
Mar 15 - 7:22 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees have signed Brennan Boesch.

He'll receive $1.5 million on a major league deal and could earn more with incentives. It was a logical fit from the moment Boesch was released by the Tigers earlier this week. He figures to get playing time in left field, which frees up Juan Rivera to platoon at first base if the Yankees can't find better options. The 27-year-old batted just .240/.286/.372 with 12 home runs and a .659 OPS in 132 games last season.
Mar 15 - 4:58 PM

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox are "talking internally" about Brennan Boesch.

Boesch was released by the Tigers on Wednesday and his name has already come up as a possibility with multiple teams. According to Abraham, the Red Sox are trying to determine if he could be an upgrade for their bench.
Mar 13 - 2:16 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman writes that the Mets "appear" to have interest in Brennan Boesch.

Like the Astros, the Mets are particularly weak in the outfield, so it stands to reason that they would have interest. The Mets are committed to giving Lucas Duda a shot in left field, but there could be an opportunity in right field. As of now, the Mets appear prepared to open the season with a platoon of Marlon Byrd and Mike Baxter.
Mar 13 - 12:35 PM

Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports that the Astros will consider signing Brennan Boesch.

The Astros have one of the least talented outfields in the majors, so it's not surprise to hear that they could take a flier. Boesch really struggled last season, but he doesn't turn 28 until April and has power potential.
Mar 13 - 11:23 AM

Joel Sherman of the New York Post was told by a source that the Yankees will at least look into the possibility of signing Brennan Boesch.

We figure many other teams will also be in the mix, but Boesch is a reasonable fit for the Yankees since he bats left-handed and has experience in both corner outfield spots. The 27-year-old batted just .240/.286/.372 with 12 home runs and a .659 OPS in 132 games last season and was given his release by the Tigers on Wednesday.
Mar 13 - 10:10 AM

Tigers released OF Brennan Boesch.

It was obvious that Boesch was the odd-man out in Detroit, but he was still tendered a contract over the winter. While the two sides later agreed to a one-year $2.3 million deal to avoid arbitration, the deal was not guaranteed, so the Tigers will only be responsible for one-sixth of the contract. The 27-year-old has power and has shown some potential, so we figure he won't be out of a job for long.
Mar 13 - 9:28 AM

Brennan Boesch went 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk in four plate appearances Tuesday against Western Michigan.

Boesch has yet to make his Grapefruit League debut because of an oblique strain, but his first game action Tuesday was obviously encouraging. "It felt great," Boesch said. "I felt excited. I was even nervous before, you know, just getting back out there. It feels great to play a sport I love again. It's been a while. ... I've been patient in my return, and I'm glad it has paid off." It's possible Boesch will play Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
Mar 5 - 8:15 PM

Brennan Boesch (oblique) will serve as the DH in a minor league game Tuesday.

Boesch has yet to make his Grapefruit League debut due to an oblique strain. However, assuming he makes it through Tuesday without any issues, he should be ready to go.
Mar 5 - 1:06 PM

Brennan Boesch (oblique) said Wednesday that he's "getting closer" to making his Grapefruit League debut.

Boesch has yet to appear in spring training games due to an oblique strain. His timetable to return is still a moving target, but he'll have plenty of time to be ready for Opening Day as long as he can avoid setbacks.
