Royals C prospect Francisco Pena launched three homers Tuesday in a win for Triple-A Omaha.

In doing so, Pena became the first Omaha player to record three homers in a game since Mike Moustaskas in 2010. It was the fourth three-homer game in the minor leagues this season and the first in the Pacific Coast League. Pena blasted 27 home runs for Omaha last year en route to a PCL All-Star nod. He struck out in his first big league at-bat earlier this season.

He'll provide some insurance over the next couple of days while Salvador Perez (hand) is on the mend. Pena, 24, was batting .240/.309/.540 over 111 plate appearances in Triple-A this year. He's not a fantasy option.

Despite not having any major league experience, Pena gets a big league deal and could open the year as Salvador Perez's backup.. The 24-year-old Pena has never appeared in the majors and spent 2013 between Double- and Triple-A with the Mets, batting .254/.300/.429 with nine homers.

Francisco Pena went 3-for-4 for low Single-A Savannah on Wednesday, giving him 10 hits in his last four games.

The 18-year-old Pena is hitting .297/.327/.426 in his second year in the Sally League. Tony's son has terrific defensive potential, so if he turns into an adequate hitter, he should have a future as a major league regular.

Francisco Pena went 2-for-3 with a homer and two walks Wednesday for low Single-A Savannah.

Pena didn't drive in a run during April, so he is making progress with three homers this month. At age 17, he doesn't need to do much offensively this year to remain a quality prospect. He's currently at .254/.324/.341 in 126 at-bats.

17-year-old Francisco Pena went 4-for-4 with a double Saturday for low Single-A Savannah.

Tony's son probably won't do a lot offensively this year, but just holding his own in full-season ball would be pretty impressive. He's 7-for-17 so far.
