Hector Gomez suffered a serious groin injury recently during Dominican Winter League play and could miss much of the 2013 season.
"He will probably have surgery in the next couple of days," said Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash. "He has had a history of groin injuries and it flared up again. The move clears him from the 40-man roster. The 24-year-old was once considered a promising prospect, but the Rockies gave up on him in June and he was limited to just 23 games at the High-A level this season due to injury.

Gomez was once very highly thought of, but he's battled injuries the last few years and batted an ugly .105/.179/.211 in 23 games as a 24-year-old at the High-A level this season. Needless to say, he's not close to being major league-ready.

Gomez was diagnosed with a strained right groin in early March and wasn't able to get back on track by the end of spring training. He was a longshot to make the Rockies' 25-man roster anyway and will likely be sent to the Triple-A level once he's healthy.

Rockies recalled INF Hector Gomez from Double-A Tulsa.

Once considered a top prospect in the organization, the 23-year-old batted .235/.272/.416 with 14 homers, 50 RBI, 16 stolen bases and a .689 OPS over 453 plate appearances at the Double-A level this season. He will function as insurance at shortstop the rest of the way.

Hector Gomez collected a double, a triple and two RBI after taking over at shortstop Saturday to lead the Rockies to an 8-6 win over a Brewers split-squad.

Gomez played the biggest role as the Rockies scored six runs in the seventh and eighth innings to complete a comeback. Troy Tulowitzki probably doesn't have anything to worry about just yet, but Gomez is a fine shortstop prospect and potentially valuable trade bait for the Rockies.

Rockies prospec Hector Gomez isn't yet close to returning from a knee injury that's sidelined him for 10 days.

Gomez, who opened the year at Single-A Modesto, fouled a pitch off his knee on April 3. "We’re somewhat concerned with it because he still has pain putting pressure on his leg," Rockies farm director Marc Gustafson told Baseball America.
